!  Birth:
(1) Not proven that he is son of Thomas PETTUS. Author assumes so because he is not the son of other PETTUSes who could possibly be his father in the area, by reason of their wills, and because of baptismal names used in the family, and because of family legend that they descend from a Mayor of Norwich (which would be his grandfather).
(2) "The Pettus Family," by Mrs. Stacy, suggests that he was s/o Col. Thomas PETTUS of Littleton rather than his grandson, but on her chart on page 5 she has aquestion mark.  A John PETTUS swears he was b. 1672, but in 1690 another John PETTUS was on a jury (had to be age 21, b. 1669 or earlier).  Therefore there were two John PETTUSes who were in the same community.

(1) It was his son John who m. Anne OVERTON.
Death: (2a) 1690, New Kent Co., VA.

(1) 1684: John PETTIS was "imported" into Rappahannock and Essex Cos., VA, several times by William Young.  Importing persons, called "headrights", gave Mr. Young land grants for 50 acres a head.  They seemed to have been in the land speculation business together.
(1) 1690: Was a Juryman in Rappahannock Co., VA.
(1) Settled in New Kent, across the Pamunkey River from King & Queen Co., VA.
(1) 1703: Was vestryman in Blissland Parish, VA.
(2a) "The Pettus Family," by Mrs. Stacy, conjectures that the John PETTUS who was the vestryman of Blissland was the s/o Col. Thomas PETTUS.
(1) Had sons John and Thomas.  Gave lands in Essex and King & Queen Cos.,VA, to son John.
