...

[Jim Weber.FTW]

Maud Fitz Geoffrey, died 1236, Countess of Essex, daughter of Geoffrey Fitz Piers, died 1213, Earl of Essex, and Beatrix de Say, daughter of William de Say.
[Magna Charta Sureties]

-----------------------

EARLDOM OF ESSEX (,6)

MAUD (DE MANDEVILLE), COUNTESS OF HEREFORD AND ESSEX, sister and heir, being the last Earl's only sister of the whole blood.  Her 1st husband, Henry (DE BOHUN), EARL OF HEREFORD, died 1 June 1220, and was buried in the Priory of Llanthony by Gloucester.  She married, 2ndly, Roger DE DAUNTESEYE, of Dauntsey and Wilsford, Wilts.  They had livery of her brother's lands, 29 October 1227, but not of Pleshey Castle till 22 February 1227/8.  A suit of divorce between them was proceeding at the death of the Countess Christine, and in consequence, 27 June 1232, of the lands which that Countess had held in dower, the manors of Enfield and Quarrendon were delivered to Roger, and those of Kimbolton and Amersham to Maud, Countess of Essex, to hold pendente causa.  Sentence of divorce having been pronounced in Court Christian in forma ecclesie, the Countess Maud had a writ of livery, 24 April 1233, for all the lands of her inheritance then in Roger's hands: but this sentence having been revoked by virtue of Papal letters, and the Countess adjudged to Roger as his lawful wife, Roger had livery of her lands, 3 July (and of Kimbolton Castle, 14 July) 1236.  She died 27 August 1236.  He, by whom she had no issue, was living in Aug. 1238.
[Complete Peerage V:134, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

-----------------------

He [Henry de Bohun] married Maud, sister and (in 1227) heir of William (de MANDEVILLE), EARL OF ESSEX, and daughter of Geoffrey (FITZPIERS), EARL OF ESSEX, by his 1st wife, Beatrice, eldest daughter and coheir of William DE SAY, of Kimbolton, Hunts, and Saham, Norfolk.  He died 1 June 1220, and was buried in the chapter house of Llanthony Priory outside Gloucester.  His widow was dowered in the manor of Wokeseie [Oaksey, Wilts] until Humphrey, son and heir of the Earl, should have assigned dower, saving to her also the manor of Witehurst [Wheatenhurst, co. Gloucesterj, which the King had delivered to her, it having been given by Geoffrey FitzPiers, father of the said Countess, to Henry, Earl of Hereford, for the marriage of his said daughter (c).  She married, 2ndly, Roger DE DAUNTESEYE, of Dauntsey, co. Wilts.  On the death of her brother, the said William (de Mandeville), Earl of Essex (8 January 1226/7), she appears to have become suo jure COUNTESS OF ESSEX.  She and Roger de Daunteseye, her second husband, had livery of her inheritance 29 October 1227 and 22 February 1227/8, and thus Pleshey Castle in Essex and another great estate, together with the Earldom of Essex, came to the de Bohuns (e).  On 24 April 1233 (a divorce having been pronounced. in court christian in ecclesiastical form, between Roger de Daunteseye and Maud, Countess of Hereford, late his wife) she had livery of her inheritance then in the hands of the said Roger, but after revocation of the sentence of divorce the said Roger had livery of her lands in July 1236.  She died 27 August 1236: he was living in August 1238.
[Complete Peerage VI:457-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

(c) That Wheatenhurst was not held by the service of being Constable of England has already been shown by J.H. Round.  For the arguments with regard to the other manors alleged to have been so held--namely Oaksey, Caldicot, and Haresfield--see Idem, and the same writer.

(e) To obtain the inheritance of the said Maud an agreement had been made with William (Marshal), Earl of Pembroke, and Roger de Dauntseye and Maud his wife were summoned to warrant to the Earl the manor of Compton which he held of them by their deed.  The Earl contended that he had fulfilled his part of the contract because the King had delivered the honour of Essex to them.

-----------------------

Maud, dau. of Geoffrey Fitz-Piers, Earl of Essex, and eventually heiress of her brother, William de Mandeville, last Earl of Essex of that family.
