In 1635 John Knight, Sr. came with his brother, Deacon Richard Knight from Romsey, England where they were merchant tailors. They came in the vessel "James" to Newbury, MA. They sailed from Southam on on April 5 and arrived in Boston on June 3rd. They were both listed as tailors of Romsey, County. He was made a freeman of MA Bay on 25 March 1636 and that year he was elected one of the selectmen of Newbury and again in 1662. Much of his service to the town was in laying out lots, roads and grants, from 1638, when he first became lot-layer, until as late as 1675 when he was still acting in that capacity. ; His only jury service was in 1647 when he was on a trial jury, but that year he was appointed by the General Court to be a commissioner to end small causes, a local justice. He was engaged in dividing common lands in 1651 and in the division of Plum island in 1656. He was a deacon of the church for many years. He was educated enough to be able to make copies of town records for court purposes. In 1663 Richard and his friend Hugh March sat down for a game of cards at Knight's home. This was an offense against Massachusetts morality and informed upon, the two were presented at the quarterly court, one of the two witnesses against them being Bathsua, wife of his hephew John Knight. In King Philip's war he supplied a dragoon horse for thirteen weeks, bridles, a horse to Dedham, Ipswich and Salisbury, a gun and two horses. Richard made his will 17 August 1681 and it was proved 25 September 1683.
John Knight and Richard Knight, tailors of Romsey, Hampshire, England, were brought to the Massachusetts Colony by the James of London, a ship of 300 tons. It sailed from Southampton on April 5, 1635 and arrived on June 3rd with passengers and cattle. John and Richard Knight, whose parents were probably William and Joan Hill Knight, settled in Newbury, Mass. Richard married Agnes Coffley. They had four daughters and he died Aug. 4, 1683 without male heirs.
John Knight and his brother, Richard, became freeman on May 25, 1636.
