Robert W. Barnes, "Baltimore County Families," pg. 582: "Richard Simpson m. Elizabeth (---) and had issue: Thomas, born 23 Sept. 1739; Nathaniel born 11 July 1745".
"The Simpson Clan," Vol. 1, #2, p. 3, article by Don Simpson: Richard was a witness along with Richard Burton to the will of John Hallum (Rowan County Will Book A, p. 60). The will was dated 8 October 1764 and was proven in Rowan County Court by Richard Simpson 9 October 1765 (Rowan County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, Minute Book 2, p. 610). Richard Simpson signed his own name.
A Richard Simpson and Thomas Simpson (Richard's son) were in the Cherokee War in NC under General Rutherford in July 1776 (part of the Revolutionary War). General Griffith Rutherford, who was commissioned for the District of Salisbury (NC) in the summer of 1776, raised an army of 2,400 men and marched on the English forces of the Cherokee nation. This expedition laid waste to 36 Cherokee towns. The Cherokee were forced to sue for peace, and in the Treaty of Long Island of 20 JULY 1777, the Cherokee ceded all lands east of the Blue Ridge, as well as lands along the Watauga, Nolichucky, Upper Holston and New River.
Between 1764 and 1765, Richard was at Mear's Fork, Rowan Co., North Carolina. Richard's land there was part of the 640 acres Lord Granville granted George Jurdan, Jr. on Mear's Fork and the Haw River. He left a will dated 24 Dec 1793 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.
Guilford Co NC Wills File # 0344: Richard's will was dated 24 Dec. 1793 and proved in May 1795 in Guilford Co., NC. In it he mentioned his sons Thomas, Richard, Nathaniel, daughters Elizabeth Knight, Jane Marcilliott, Eleanor Hicks, step daughter Elizabeth Carrol and the following grandchildren: Elizabeth Reese Hicks; Elizabeth, Nathaniel, and Richard who were children of his son Thomas; Peter Ryan, William and Richard who were sons of his son, Richard. His will was witnessed by John Campbell, Mary Campbell and Edward Edwards.
