"John's father was Thomas Jollie who was born at Crofton Hall, County Stafford, England about 1617 and died in VA in 1693.  He was an adherent of King Charles I of England and accompanied the king to his execution.  After the execution, Thomas lost all his property and privileges and emigrated to VA about 1651.  He married Margaret Skinner.  Margaret died January 6, 1647."  According to this historian, John came to Virginia in 1651 at the age of 9 with his father.

Notes:From Genealogical and Personal History of the Upper Monongahela Valley, WV, by James Morton Callahand, Vol. 1, pp. 390-95:
"John Jolliffe, the American heir of Thomas Jolliffe, of Crofton Hall, and Margaret Skinner, his wife, was born in England about the year 1642, and came to this country when very young, soon after the execution of Charles I.  He settled on the western branch of the Elizabeth River, Norfolk Co., Virginia, and on Jan. 22, 1662, bought of John Lawrence 100 acres of land.  Other lands were soon acquired by purchase and grants under the law that gave 50 acres a piece for those servants brought over at a master's expense.  He built one of the first grist mills ever erected in Virginia, having first received a permit from his Majesty's Council.  About the year 1662 he married Mary, only daughter and heiress of Peter Rigglesworth, of Norfolk Co., VA.  They had 4 sons and 3 daughters: Joseph, John, Thomas, Peter, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary.  John Jolliffe seems to have been a man of education not withstanding the vicissitudes of his youth, and possessed of some wealth when he came to the colony to which he added so largely that he was able to provide handsomely for all of his children.  At his death he was about 76 yrs. old.  He seems to have always resided in Virginia, on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk County."
