NOTE: The people on World Connect, who I was partially following on the ancestry of John's daughter Elizabeth, have John preceded by 3 Roger Mauduits in a row. I have expanded this to 5 Roger Mauduits in a row, due to the fact that I now have good sources and dates for the first and last Roger in the sequence, which leads to the extra generations (I assume they might all be named Roger, which makes it hard to tell in the records when one Roger leaves off and another takes over).

The following post to SGM ties John into the Mauduits of Eshot, and also brings in the Burton Leonard connection:

Subject: Re: Thomas de Gray of Heton Sister Joan
...The reason for the involvement of Sir Thomas Umfraville is less obvious, though it may be of significance that his grandmother Eleanor (Lumley?), widow of Robert de Umfraville, Earl of Angus, remarried Sir Roger Mauduit of Eshot, Northumberland, Chamberlain of Scotland d.1351 [CP I 150], whose descendant Roger, son and heir of John Mauduit of Burton Leonard, quitclaimed Eshot to Sir John Heron of Crawley in 1375. It is possible that Sir John Heron may have had a Mauduit wife, in which case his children could have shared common ancestry with Sir Thomas Umfraville via Eleanor...

John's mother's (Eleanor's) first husband didn't die until March 1325. John was obviously born sometime after that, even though the date of John's parents marriage is not exactly known (only the date that they were fined for marrying without a license).
