He fought against the armada in 1588 and took part in the
expedition
to Cádiz in 1596, being created Baron Howard of Walden. Under James I he was lord chamberlain from 1603 to 1614 and lord high treasurer from 1614 to 1618. In 1619 he was fined £7,000 and imprisoned for ten days for embezzlement, but was subsequently restored to royal favour.

Nottingham, Charles Howard, 1st Earl of (1536-1624), English statesman and naval commander. He succeeded his father, William Howard as Baron Howard of Effington in 1573 and was made knight of the Garter in 1574. In 1585 he became lord high admiral and in 1588 commanded the English fleet in the defeat of the Spanish Armada. With Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, he commanded the English naval expedition that in 1596 sank the Spanish fleet and sacked the city of Cádiz. Howard was created Earl of Nottingham in 1597. In 1601 he took a leading part in suppressing the re bellion of Essex against Queen Elizabeth I. He served on many royal commissions, including those for the trial of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1586, for the trial of Essex in 1601, for the union of England and Scotland in 1604, and for the trial of the conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot in 1606.
1st earl of Suffolk. The son of the 4th duke of Norfolk, h e was attainted at the time of his father's execution, bu t his rights were restored in 1584. He volunteered for nava l duty against the Spanish Armada (1588), was knighted at s ea, and rose quickly to high rank. Howard commanded the squ adron that attacked the Spanish treasure fleet off the Azor es (1591). Recalled from naval duty to enter Parliament i n 1597, he was made Baron Howard of Walden. In 1601 he wa s commander of the forces that besieged the earl of Essex i n his house, and was a member of the jury which tried him . Upon the accession of James I (1603), he was created ear l of Suffolk and later held a number of official posts. I n 1614 he became lord high treasurer. His daughter, France s Howard, and her husband, Robert Carr, earl of Somerset, w ere tried and convicted (1616) in the murder of Sir Thoma s Overbury. Suffolk was accused (1618) of embezzlement an d fraud as treasurer, tried (1619), convicted and heavily f ined. Although he and his wife, who was thought to have inf luenced him, were soon released, he did not regain influenc e.
