By Elizabeth Ogborne

Suene was succeeded by his son Robert de Essex; whose son Henry de Essex was con-stable to king Heury II. and hereditary standard-bearer of England. In 1103, during a battle with the Welsh, Henry de Essex threw down the royal staudard, and flying, exclaimed, " the king is

Raleigh was Warden of the Cinque Ports and also Hereditary Standard bearer to the King, but for cowardice and treason, in the Welsh wars (battle of Coleshill, 1157), forfeited his lands, and the King then seized the Castle of Saltwood, which he granted to Randulph de Broc. Thus Saltwood Castle became associated with one of the most striking and lurid incidents in English history.

1163 : trial by combat with Robert the Montfort. Henry lost, was outlawed and his great fief was added to the crowns demesne.

The manor of Marks Hall was recorded in 1086. The house and estate of Marks Hall belonged to Hugh de Essex, but were granted to the de Merc family in 1163; they had been tenants there since 1086 and took their later surname 'de Merkeshall' or 'de Markeshall' from the estate.

De Montfort's estates having been confiscated, they were given to Hugh de Essex, a notably undistinguished Standard Bearer to Henry II.

In 1163, the Markshall family are granted the manor house and the estate. After a failed plot to overthrow the King, Henry I, by the grandson of Hugh de Montfort, the manor is granted to Hugh de Essex (date unknown). However, Hugh de Essex flees in a battle against the Welsh in 1157, which leads to defeat. He is charged with treason, although the King intervenes and his life is spared. The manor is removed from his possession and granted to the Markshall family, who hold it for over 500 years. However, little is known about the family.

pp.449-450 de Essex, Henricus

"He left a son Henry by his wife Cecilia…" Cecilia may be identified as the daughter of Roger de Valognes and Agnes, daughter of John 'nepos' Waleran fitz Ranulf (and sister of Eustace and Payn Fitz John), by various evidences. After the confiscation of her husband's lands she was holding North Weald Basset, and five fees pertaining to it of the Valognes fee, from which she granted the church to Clerkenwell priory. This can only have constituted her marriage portion and was not subject to the forfeiture. Additionally, after the downfall of Henry de Essex, Agnes fitz John settled 2 knights' fees from her own marriage portion on Gunnor de Essex, her foster child and presumed granddaughter, in Fulbourne, Teversham, and Westley, Cambridgeshire, in a charter heavily witnessed by the family and household of Agnes, Countess of Essex, presumed elder sister of Gunnor. There may have been a double alliance arranged between the sons and daughters of Henry de Essex and Alberic de Vere (d.1141), for Alice de Vere, widow of Robert de Essex, held dower of the barony. Agnes de Essex had originally been raised to be wife of Geoffrey de Vere, but on refusing the match married his brother Alberic instead.
