MONTAYNE RITES SET: FORMER TOWN JUSTICE
Esperance -- Archie C. Montanye, 63 Main St., a retired Esperance postmaster and town justice, died Wednesday at his home after a long illness. He was 79 years old.
Born in Esperance, he had lived here all his life and was postmaster for 23 years, retiring in 1960. He then became secretary-treasurer of the Esperance Cemetery Association.
For 15 years, he served as justice of the peace and as a member of the Esperance Town Board. Supervisor Robert Lang cited him as "one of the best justices Esperance ever had, and one of the best in the county." He was an active contributor to town government, Mr. Lang said, and he served as town historian for a number of years.
Judge Montayne was a member of the Schoharie County Police Officers' Sssociation; the County Magistrates' Association; Elks' Lodge No. 2507, Esperance; the Esperance-Sloansville United Methodist Church; and the Republican Club of Esperance.
He was recognized by the community several years ago with an "Archie Montanye Day" observance.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Hopkins Montanye; two sons, Charles W. Montanye, Esperance, and Schuyler James Martin, Long Island; a sister, Mrs. Gladys Rockwood, Arizona; four grandchildren, Scott, Christopher, Alex and Schuyler James Martin 3rd, all of Long Island; and three nephews and several cousins.
The funeral will be Sunday afternoon at 2 at the Langan Funeral Home, Central Bridge, with the Rev. Alfred Scott, retired pastor of the North Bennington Baptism Church in Vermon officiating. Burial will be in Esperance Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday evening from 7 to 9. Members of the Police Officers' Association and Magistrates' Association will call at 7, and the Elks ritual service will be held at 7:30.
MONTANYE - On Wednesday, March 16, 1977, Archie C. Montanye of 63 Main St., Esperance; husband of the former Anna Hopkins; father of Charles W. Montanye of Esperance, Schuiyler James Martin of Long Island; brother of Mrs. Gladys Rockwood of Arizona; grandfather of Scott Martin, Christopher Martin, Alex Martin, and Schuyler Martin III; also survived by three nephews and several cousins. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Langan Funeral Home, Central Bridge. Calling house Saturday evening 7 to 9 at the funeral home. It is requested by the family that flowers please be omitted. On Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Schoharie County Policemen's Association and the Schoharie County Magistrates Association will meet at the funeral home. At 7:30 p.m. the Elks Club of Esperance No. 2507 will meet to conduct their ritualistic service. Burial will be in Esperance Cemetery.
