Johnstown -- Services will be held today for Howard E. Montanye, 77, of Trackside II Apartments, who died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after a long illness.
Born in Jersey City, NJ, Mr. Montanye lived in Mayfield most of his life before moving to Johnstown in 1978. He was a gloveworker at various companies last employed by the Grandoe Glove Co., before retiring in 1966.
He was an outfielder for the former Mayfield Pirates semi-professional baseball team. Mr. Montanye was a member of Johnstown 50-Plus Senior Citizens in Gloversville.
His first wife, Esther Handy Montanye, died in 1976. ; Survivors include his wife, Doris Frederick Montanye; a stepson, Paul Frederick of Caroga Lake; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Dorothy MacVean of Johnstown; four brothers, Ralph Montanye, Arthur Montanye, and Sanford Montanye all of Mayfield, and Eldon Montanye of Dennies Crossing, Fulton County; three sisters, Edith Bergmann of Gloversville, Anna Mae Tomlinson of R.D. Gloversville, and Ruth Washburn of Dennies Crossing; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be held 10 a.m. today at the Walrath and Bushouer Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. Burial will be in Mayfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnstown Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
