The funeral for Carl Swanson Jr., 81, of Lyons will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Lyons. He died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at Logan Valley Manor in Lyons. Swanson was born Dec. 2, 1922, in Lyons. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1940. Upon his graduation, he traveled to Albany, N.Y., to work on the railroad. After finding that was not his calling in life, he returned home to Lyons to work with his father in the trucking business, marking the beginning of Osean Swanson & Son Trucking. He owned the first 50-foot stock trailer to come off the assembly line in the United States. He remained in the trucking business for more than 60 years until 2003 at age 81. He married Eva E. Reinert on Jan. 15, 1946, in Blair. Following the death of his wife in 1984, he had a special friend and companion, Agnes Whitmore, who preceded him in death in 1994. He married Lela Silver on June 27, 1998, in Oakland. On Aug. 4, 2003, he had heart surgery in Lincoln, requiring several blood transfusions, contracting the West Nile Virus. He suffered many health issues and numerous hospital stays in the past year. In June, he entered Logan Valley Manor. Survivors include: his wife, Lela; three daughters, Carlene (Mrs. Alan) Gatzemeyer of Bancroft, Kay (Mrs. Joseph) Wiles of Lyons and Connie (Mrs. Robert) Murphy of North Bend; a stepdaughter, Alix Jorden; three sisters, Dorothy Neuhaus, Jean Preston and Shirley Reil, all of Lyons; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren a stepgrandson and the extended family of the late Agnes Whitmore. He also was preceded in death by an infant sister and two brothers. The Rev. Gary Fugman will officiate Wednesday's service. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. today at Palmquist-Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Visitation continues one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will be in Lyons Cemetery.
