"There are many stories of Uncle Sam. He was a favorite uncle to Mark and Phoebe Stewart 's children. He never married.
"Sam and the kids went ice fishing in his Model T and they had to drain the radiator. When done, they had to jack up the back, start the automobile, and put water in it from the ice fishing hole to get back to town.
"Sam and nephew Walter went to Yellowstone National Park, just the two of them. Walter was 11 years old. Uncle Sam left Walter drive most of the way. The roads were really not that good back then either. With all that experience Walter was able to drive his mother Phoebe to Kansas City, MO for Phoebe's sister Mary's funeral. Sister Ella Claire was supposed to go with them but Ella Claire fell asleep and they carried her back into the house. While doing that, brother Bill sneaked out into the automobile and made the trip instead.
"Sam took a trip back to NJ with nephew Bill.
"In 1910 he lived with Ella and Minnie. He was a tailor by trade, like his father. It was said he was a bench tailor. For awhile he taught tailoring in Kearney, Buffalo County, NE at a vocational school.
"He had a farm on the Niobrara River and also lived in Valentine until about the 1920s. In Valentine, he lived across from Mark and Phoebe Stewart.
"Nephew Walter worked for his great uncle Sam, doing the pressing."
