Letter about her grandfather from Jean Wittsell, written on 15 October 1970, to Edyth Callas.
"As I remember him, your Uncle Val [my grandfather] was a very flashy fellow, always nattily dressed with his beautiful many-hued gold pocket watch and chain, very high spirited and jovial, with a full mustache and the clearest sky blue eyes that always sparkled with michievousness. He was a slight-built man, being on 5'7" in height, but he made up for his short stature with his extreme pride. He was somewhat a man of mystery since he never spoke at length of his family, only giving us glimpses into his past from time to time. Still we gleaned enough to come to the conclusion that his was certainly a very colorful life. ; We knew of my mother's half-sister Florence, but were never aware of the circumstances.
"He didn't suffer any illness, not even a cold, as far back as my mother can remember. Granddal Val always ate half a raw lemon with salt each morning and attributed this to his good health. He had many home remedies for ailments and injuries, and felt he could treat injuries and ailments as well as any doctor--and proved this fact many times. My mother often speaks of the time the twins, my Aunt Lucille and Uncle Levi, were born prematurely and barely alive. He promptly administered a drop of whiskey each and they survive to this day. This was almost a miracle considering the fact that they were so small when born they fit together nicely for the first few weeks in a cigar box he'd fashioned into a crib for them. To further prove my point, at another time he accidentally cut off an index finger at the first joint. He ran to the house, bathed the severed appendage in Vaseline, slapped it back together and tightly swathed it with bandage. While that joint had a bend to it, the finger grew backa together very nicely and he had full use of it the rest of his days. He didn't die of an illness but rather an injury--he fell and broke a hip from which he never recovered."
