A story was passed on to Lee Bullock by a cousin Loraine (Bullock) Maclaren. She was told by her father Don Bullock: Shortly after the notification of lost at sea, Arthur's uncle (Norton Bullock) said he had seen Arthur during a tour on the grounds where he was employed (Believed to have been at the Veterans Facility here in Grand Rapids, Michigan). And that He (Norton Bullock) had talked and corresponded with someone about Arthur not having any memory of his earlier years', and was told he did not know his name and that it would be better if Arthur did not hear of his past at that time. Norton said, shortly after this discovery he was told Arthur had died and could find nothing more about him. His mother Rosella was never told of this encounter. Norton believed this to have been his nephew to his dying day. But it was never proven rather it was just a wish of an uncle for his nephew to be living! Or in fact it was Arthur. (?) "No one will ever know."
Per Lorraine Bullock 2004 - LDB
Rosella (Winn) (Shales) Hartle's niece, Vonda (DeGeer) Chlubna, is living in Detroit, Michigan. She remembered the ship as a (battle ship) & number 444 on its side, because it was the same as Arthur's mother's bank account number at that time. She said that Arthur lived in California.
As she recalled he enlisted out of Norfolk when he was abt. 17 years ol

USS Ingraham (DD-444) sank in a mid-Atlantic collision with a tanker.
Conditions Dark and dense Fog:USS Ingraham received orders to investigate a ship collision in the convoy. As they approached the sight of the accident between the Uss Buck DD-420, (destroyer) and Tss Awatea (Canadian Troop Transport) they ran into a fog bank visibility 0. At this point another member of the convoy USS Chemung AO-30,(Navy Tanker) ran into the Uss Ingraham DD-444 (Destroyer)
I believe that because of the accidents' magnitude, and a war being fought, it took the Navy a long period of time before everything was was brought into the light and sorted out. There for classified (TOP SECRET) by the Navy Dept. for a long period of time.
