Written by Sally Van Norman McLain - "This was Grandpa [Aaron] Van Norman's statement to my father [Hiram Van Norman] in the spring of 1861, just before Civil War was declared. He [Aaron] had been in Texas [Victoria, Victoria County, Texas] visiting his three sons after Grandmother's death. He wanted to come home so they wrote my father to send for him. We had been there at my father's but a short time before he [Aaron] was taken sick, thought he was going to die and wished my father to know that he was not his son. My Mother and I were present when he told him.
He said Capt. House was a perfect gentleman, kind and loving to his mother and he need not be ashamed of the name of him, as he was in every way a worthy man, one to be proud of, that he could
wirte to Aunt Anna. She had married an Alvard and was living in New York City, had two daughters who had married brothers by the name of Field. She would give him all the particulars of his mother's marriage, which he did. I did the writing as my father's hands were so cramped he could not write much. She wrote back the same as grandpa had told us and urged my father [Hiram] to go and see the Church Book, himself. He began making preparations to go but war between the North and South was declared and lines closed. The boys volunteered and it was impossible to ge then. Only three letters was passed by himself and Aunt. We preserved thise letters all during the war, but they were stolen just after the war closed. Aunt Anna was dead, and he had no means to go then, as his business was lost out and he received a very bad hurt. ..."
