Baldwin I of Ghent, Aalst, Waas,Drongen and Ruiselede (died 1082)

The land of Aalst was a county dependant on the German Emperor till the twelfth century. Till then it had no connection with the county of Flanders. After the death of count Diederik of Aalst in 1166, the count of Flanders integrated Aalst in Flanders. By doing this he came a vassal of two feudal lords: the king of France and the Emperor of Germany. His original possessions were called crown-Flanders, west of the river Scheldt, whereas the East was called Imperial Flanders. The count of Flanders became also got the title of count of Aalst. The land of Aalst was ruled by a viscount in a castle and court named "het Steen"in Dutch and "le Piron" in French. The "land of Alost" consisted of over 50 villages. It covered about 1/3 of the actual province East-Flanders, especially the east bank of the river Scheldt=Schelde=Escaut=Scaldis but reaching to the southern part of the city of Ghent. The count of Flanders got more power and got more independent due to the fact of serving two sovereigns.

The family van Aelst (from Aelst), also called van Gent (from Ghent) had the original count of Aelst, till the 12th century. Then Aalst was “fusioned” with Flanders and became a viscounty of it. Soon the family Tollin , lord of Popperode, became the viscounts.
Ancestors from the counts of Aalst are known from 962 on (Warlop 1967: The Flemish nobility).
The lords of Aalst with a title of count (depending on the emperor of the Roman Empire of Germany) were :
1. Baldwin I of Ghent, Aalst, Waas,Drongen and Ruiselede (died 1082) 2. Baldwin II of Ghent, Aalst, Waas and Drongen (died 1097), son of 1. 3. Baldwin III of Ghent, Aalst, Waas and Drongen (died 1127), son of 2. 4. Ivan of Aalst, Waas, Drongen and Liedekerke (died 1145), brother of 3. 5. Thierry/Diederik of Aalst, Drongen and Waas (died 1166), son of 4.
This counts often used only a part of their family name. Curiously, 4. is remembered in the abbey of Drongen as Ivan of Aelst, in the region of Waas (this is the neighborhood of the town of Sint-Niklaas), he was often registered as Iwein van Aalst. In Ghent they had functions and properties in and around the important abbey of Sint-Pieters.
The counts of Aalst, as well as the counts of Flanders, maintained power with the help of a number of locally important families. Members of these families shared public functions, such as meier (mayor), baljuw (bailiff), schepen (alderman) and they also shared the feudal estates. When they got entitled of a feudal estate or function, they delivered a document in which they recognized their superior (feudal relief act). Some of these acts are conserved untill today. Often it is mentioned that the feudal estate or function formerly belonged to one’s father or mother.

Van Aelst was originally surely the same as Van Haelst, Van Halst, Van Alst etc.
Martens and Maertens were originally the same. The publishers of “Gemeentekrediet” (Brussels) published a very complete book in Dutch (Debrabandere) about Flemish names in Belgium and Northern France (in Dutch) and a book in French about the surnames in French-speaking part of Belgium.
