"John Gary was born ca 1808 in New Jersey; family tradition gives his birthplace as Newton. He had two brothers, Samuel and Caleb, who went west during the gold rush, and possibly another brother, Daniel, who came into the Wyoming Valley about the same time John did and eventually settled not far from him in Susquehanna County.
"John was a lumberman by occupation and had a tendency to follow the boom lumbering towns. He bought properties and stayed only long enough to timber them off and moved on for bigger and better prospects. He met and married Amy Montanye, daughter of Andrew and Amy (Harding) Montanye ca 1831. They seem to have stayed in Luzerne County before moving to Tuscarora Township, Bradford County, Pa., in 1840 where he was where he was assessed that year for owning 2 horses and 1 cow. Tuscarora at that time was buzzing with new lumber mills and there were good prospects for earning a living there. By the next year they had moved a few miles over into the next county, Susquehanna. By this time they had six children: William, Charles, Frances, Samuel, Martha A., and Emily. In 1842 John Jr. was born in in 1843 they lost their daughter Frances, only 7 years of age. She was buried in the Berthoff cemetery in Jessup township. Four more children were born to them while living in Jessup township: Catharine in 1844, my great-grandfather Joseph in 1846, Eliza in 1848, and Andrew in 1850. In 1852 their 12th child, Peter Jacob, was born at Snake Creek, Franklin Forks. Then came Affa, Malinda, Leonard K., and Perdita Rose. In 1860 they were living in Silver Lake township and remained there until at least November of 1861 when their daughter Affa died of diptheria. She was buried beside her sister Frances in the Berthoff cemetery in Jessup township.
"During the following three years, four of their sons went off to fight for the Union cause in the Civil War. ; Charles died near the end of the war, leaving a wife and three young children. Joseph was severely wounded but made it through the war, as did Samuel. John Jr. became ill with typhoid during his last hitch in the service, was sent home, and died shortly after arriving there.
"It was during this period of time that John became severely ill and began to show signs of 'deterioration'. Dr. E. L. Gardner, the family physician, called it 'general softening of the system and brain'. ... No longer able to support his family....the Poor Masters of Jessup township finally intervened. His property was sold at public sale and his wife and children were separated from him and taken into custody by the township. This chain of events must have not only humiliated him but drove him into a determined state, for he promptly went to Mr. S. H. Sayre, a large landholder in Silver Lake, and applied for work. ... He worked for Mr. Sayre at cutting brush, taking care of stock, and doing little odd jobs. Mr. Sayre said of him that John could not work with any regularity, but that he was a very industrious man and did all he possibly could. His family soon came back to him; poor as they were, they were together again. The children helped out by working out as soon as they were old enough and Mr. Sayre and the neighbors helped the family all they could.
When John died very suddenly on the 14th of May in 1867, Mr. Sayre presented the family with a new suit of clothes to bury him in. Although there is no tombstone for John, I suspect he is buried in the Berthoff cemetery next to his son John Jr; however, there are no records as of yet to prove it."
