In 1849, Arabelle's parents [Alexander and Ruthanna] who had been living in Virginia, decided to cross the plains after hearing of the California Gold Rush/ Along the way, Ruthanna became very ill and was bedfast most of the journey. Shortly after the family reached Portland, Oregon, she passed away. Belle's father started stores and trading posts at Lafayette and Eugene, Oregon. He married Charity Christiana Smith, who had a son, John. John later changed his name to Levi Ankeny.
Belle was traveling with her step brother Levi, up the Columbia River on a boat which was taking supplies to Lewiston,Idaho, from Portland, when she met Lt. Darius Bullock Randall. They were married on July 4, 1865. Five children were born to this union.
At the outbreak of the Nez Perce Indian War, Tolo, an Indian woman and friend of the white families, warned them that the Nez perce planned to attack the settlers. Capt. Randall and a group of volunteers defended their families who had gathered in a building adjacent to the school house in Mount Idaho. Capt. Randall was killed on July 5, 1877. On a monument erected at the site of the fort was a plaque: "In memory of Captain Randall, the brave volunteers and pioneers who were fortified here, stood in defence, and fought in the Nez Perce Indian War of 1877". The plaque has been removed for safe keeping. Capt. Randall is buried in the Mount Idaho cemetery, his gravestone reading "D. B. Randall, died July 5, 1877 aged 40 yr 5 mo 23 days".

They had one daughter, Jaye Meyer Dorman, who was born March 13, 1883. On April 25, 1906, Jaye married Almon E. Randall, a nephew of Capt. D. B. Randall.
