Enfant(s):
William Montaney enlisted in Company E, 115th Regiment of New York Volunteers and died of wounds received in the attack on Richmond, Virginia. His military papers, #101,177, give 27 October 1864 as the presumed date of death, since William was sent off to a field hospital and never seen again. Now we have found a marker for William Montaney in a Confederate cemetery in Richmond, giving the date of death as 25 October 1864. Could he have been treated in a Confederate field hospital? Was he found on the battlefield and presumed to be a Confederate? But how was his name known, if his regiment was not known? And why the discrepancy of two days?
