Was a Lieutenant in a regiment of Loyalist volunteers in the RegularRoyal troops under the superior officer, Col. Isaac Hatfield, his brotherin law.
_______________
Thomas Kip (Benjamin, Jesse, Jacob, Hendrick) was born July 14, 1756;
and died Sept. 1, 1823. He married Abigail Hatfield.
[The book mentions nothing about his Loyalism, even though both he and
Abigail were Loyalist or from Loyalist families. Abigail was not only
the daughter of a Loyalist, but also the sister of Thomas's superior
officer Col. Isaac Hatfield. The Hatfields were a cohesive Loyalist
family: four of the Hatfield brothers were Loyalists, and five of the
Hatfield sisters married Loyalists. All of these Hatfield Loyalists
went to Nova Scotia, where one of them was the mother to Thomas's
brother Samuel's second wife. ]
Thomas resided at Marshalltown, Parish of Digby. [This is on
the other end of Nova Scotia from the Westchester settlement in
Cumberland Co., by the way] Thomas Kipp petitioned for recompense due
to losses suffered as a Loyalist, but his claim for 1/4 part of the
farm
confiscated from his father in North Castle, for horse and cattle, and
for unremunerated service to the British army was denied. He also
testified about his brothers Samuel and James Kipp in 1786. He was
taxed in the Parish of Digby in 1789.
In 1790, one of Thomas Kipp's neighbors, George Wood of
Marshalltown, departed for Ontario, where he had relatives residing
near
Brockville. The very favorable comments sent by Wood to his friends in
Digby, coupled with the uncertainty of economic conditions in Nova
Scotia during this period, led a number of families to migrate to Upper
Canada. Among them, Thomas Kipp of Marshalltown "bade adieu in 1811 to
their adopted home and proceeded by way of Boston and New York to the
western Prairies."
Despite what the local history of Digby says, Thomas does not
seem to have gone to Upper Canada (or at least for long). He returned
to New York City with his family. His will was dated 1818, and
probated
Sept. 5, 1823.
The will of Thomas Kipp of New York City was dated May 24, 1818; and
probated SEpt. 5, 1823. He leaves .........to
daugher.......son.........(New York Will, Liber 58, pp. 262-264). The
will of Abigail Kip of the City of New York, widow of Thomas Kip,was
dated Feb. 13, 1839, and probated April 5, 1839............(New York
Wills, Liber 77, pp. 378-381.
