   Ancestral Lines: John Anthony, born in Hempstead (sic), England, 1607 and
died in Portsmouth, RI, 28 July 1675. Married Susannah Potter, sister of Robert Potter of Newport and Warwick, RI, about 1640. They were ancestors of General Nathaniel Greene, Gilbert Charles Stuart, Governor and U.S. Senator Henry B. Anthony, and Susan B. Anthony. John Anthony lived in Hempstead (Hemel Hempstead), Hertfordshire, near London before he came to America on the barque Hercules, John Kiddey, Master, departing on or soon after 16 April 1634, having been left behind when the Mary and John sailed 24 March 1633/34 (NEHGR, 9:267). He settled in Portsmouth, RI, where he was an innkeeper. Made a freeman in Portsmouth 16 March 1640 and of the RI colony 14 Sept. 1640. He was a corporal in the Indian Wars in 1644 (Records of the Colony of RI, 1:27). He served as a Commissioner to the General Court in 1661 and as a Deputy in the General Assembly from 1666 to 1672. His will, dated 23 July 1675, was proved 21 Aug. 1675. All his children were probably born in Portsmouth.

   Migration: "As the name John Anthony does not appear in New England for many years after 1634, there is no assurance that this man did come on the Hercules." (Published in 1999.)

   Henderson: John Anthony, born 1607, Hemstead (sic), England, first of the
American branch. Embarked, age 27, on 16 April 1634 in the ship Hercules, John Kiddy, master. Settled in Portsmouth, RI. Freeman of Portsmouth 14 July 1640, and also was a corporal in the military company. Married Susannah
Potter, who preceded him in death. Will proved 21 Aug. 1675.
   Chas. Anthony: John Anthony. Took the oath of allegiance and supremacy 24
March 1634 with intent to embark on the Mary and John, but was delayed and took passage on the ship Hercules. He had lived in the village of Hampstead, near London, and had been an innkeeper, as well as having other occupations. The original family name probably was spelled Antony, and is now so spelled by one branch in England. He died 28 July 1675. Will proved 21 Aug. 1675. ship Mary and John to "oversee the Chattle to pass in the Hercules..."
   Anthony/Greene: John Anthony Jr., born 1607, Hampstead, Somerset (sic),
England; died 28 July 1675, Portsmouth, RI. Married Susanna Potter, born about 1620; of South Kingstown, RI. Died 1675.  Later says he was born in London, Middlesex.
   Immigrants to America: John Anthony (Anthonie), name originally spelled
Antony as one branch in England still use. Born 1607 Hempstead (sic), England, son of John Anthony, a physician of London, and died 28 July 1675, Portsmouth, R.I. Sailed for New England 16 March 1641 in the ship Hercules and settled in Portsmouth. Admitted freeman 16 March 1641; deputy to General Court., 1666-72. Married Susanna Potter.    [There is a Hampstead, Greater London, on my road atlas. Sounds like the
right name in the right location, Middlesex, and near London. Various Hempsteads are in Essex, Kent and Norfolk.]
