Emily Patience Teter married, 28 September 1900, John "Burt" Hill.
Obituary: 9 Jan. 1891, Belleville (IL) Advocate:
"Died, Thursday, January 1st 1891, at his home three miles north of Freeburg, Mr. Solomon Teter, aged 81 years, 10 months and 12 days......
"He was married to Polly Herring, Jan. 24, 1833..... To their marriage were born 15 children; five of them died in infancy, one son and two daughters died after they were grown up and while at home under the care of their parents. The two oldest daughters died after they were married. Mary, the wife of Robert Carr, died in her 36th year, and Sarah the wife of Abner Carr, died in her 43rd year. Of this family there are but five still living - Louisa, wife of William Blanton, in Kansas, Esther, wife of John Lortz, in this county; Philip Teter, in Carterville, Williamson county, Illinois; Isaac Teter, in Carthage, Missouri, and Emily, the youngest of the family who lived with her father until his death, taking charge of the house and looking after the wants of her father."
Emily Teter Hill was said to have been a huge woman. ; The following is an account of the removal of her body from her home after her death, as told to us by Mrs. Mattie Gerden McBride Eubanks, who was about the age of 15 years at that time:
John Hill was a little man. He and Emily would drive a one horse wagon; she took up all of the seat except the end where he sat; the wagon would precede down the street lopsided because of her weight. She grew a mustache. Maud her step-daughter found something to remove it. Mrs. Mattie Eubanks was told by her parents not to laugh. Emily weighed over 400 pounds.
Mattie stated that Emily was so large that a circus wanted to hire her as their fat lady. John would not allow this.
Mattie was at the house in which John and Emily lived at the time of Emily's death. They had to place Emily on a large door, and they had to take the facing and the window out. Emily was hauled on a stake wagon by two horses. Ezra Turner (a midget) drove the wagon. He was the only one on it. Her coffin was especially made for her in St. Louis. Emily is buried in Hammond Cemetery in Sesser, Franklin County, Illinois.
We found her grave in the Hammond Cemetery. Her grave is a large lot, probably two plots. Her tombstone reads:
"In Loving Remembrance of Emily P., wife of John Hill, October 30, 1857-October 11, 1910." "A precious one from us has gone. A voice we loved is stilled, A place is vacant in our home. Which never can be filled."
Emily Patience Teter Hill was the daughter of Solomon Teter and Mary "Polly" Moore Herring. Emily Patience and John Hill had no children.
