THORNTON FETES DOCTOR AND WIFE ON GOLDEN DAY
Village Has a Holiday for N. E. Olivers
The village of Thornton donned its holiday attire on Tuesday evening and strolled down to the town hall to help Dr. and Mrs. Nelson E. Oliver celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. An old friend, Charles Flack, was master of ceremonies and Dr. W. C. Goddard of the First Methodist church in Harvey conducted the ceremony at 9 o'clock when Dr. and Mrs. Oliver renewed the vows made 50 years ago.
It was in her father's farmhouse, which stood on the land that is now the grounds of the Glenwood Manual Training school, that Miss Margaret Ellis, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Ellis, became the bride of the young doctor on April 7, 1886. The doctor had come to Thornton four yeras before just after his graduation from the Rush Medical college.
Recall Doctor's Day.
Immediately after their marriage, Dr. and Mrs. Oliver established their home in the rooms adjoining the doctor's office in the business district of Thornton. Four years later they built the residence on Hunter avenue that since has been their home.
In the early days Dr. Oliver drove a horse and buggy when making his visits. Old residents will recall the little white spitz, Bruno, who accompanied him for many years and waited as he made his calls. The horse and buggy long ago were replaced by an auto and Dr. Oliver is his own chauffeur.
Has Fishing Trophies.
As a younger man, Dr. Oliver was an ardent sportsman. Fishing still is his favorite sport. His den is filled with trophies of the woods and stream and he delights to tell of the abundance of game found in the community in those days. Thorn creek then was the habitat of large black bass, catfish, silver bass, and some northern pike. He also remembers bagging 35 prairie chickens in one day. Snipe, plover and ducks too were plentiful.
Later he turned to collecting old firearms as a pastime. Among the museum pieces in his possession is a long gun of European manufacture, possibly two centuries old. It is decorated with solid gold inlay and the stock is ornamented with minute filigree work.
