Sir Richard Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton, b.1327.Thisgallantsoldier was knight e d b y Edwqrd III at the battle ofDurham,wheretheScotch were defeated in 1346, and was pres e n t at thesiege ofcalaisinthe same year. Without attempting to follow thisnobleman throu g hallhis martial exploits, which, howeer, standrecordedbytheireyewitnesses, the severa l r o yal, noble, and nightlydeponentsinthecelebrated controversy sustaineed by him with Si r Ri chardGrosvenorforthe right of bearing his family coat of arms, it isenough tosaythatbe tw e en 1346 and 1385, a period of forty years, therewasscarcelyabattle of note in England , Fr n ce, Spain, or Scotland,wheretheEnglishforces were engaged, in which Scrope did not ga in h onour.But asastatesman he was still more distinguished. He was lordhightreasurertoEdw a r d III, and twice lord chancellor of England inthereign ofRichardII, by both which sovere i g ns he was entrusted withmanyotheremploymentsof honour and confidence. Walsingham stat e s h imtohave beenremarkablefor his extraordinary wisdom and integrity,andrecords hisfirm n es s inrefusing to put the great seal as chancellortothe profusegrants madeby Richard I I t o h is favourites. WhenRichard,incensed atthis, wsentmessenger after messenger to Scrop e , "desiringhim forthwithto returnthe great seal, he refused to deliver it toanyother per s on than to theking himself." Lord Scrope was summonedtoparliamentcontinuouslyduring the r e ign s of Edward III and RichardII,and was atrier ofpetitions on many occasions. In 1386 , h e challengedthe rightof SirRobert Grosvenor to bear arms. "Azure, a bend,or:" andthe m em orablesuit, instituted for the decision of thisheraldiccontroversy,lastedupwards f four y ea rs , and was at lengthdecided inhis favour.Scropehaving established by the most eviden c e a vast numberofdeponents,consisting of the most distinguished men of theday, fromJohn o f Gau nt,the King's uncle to Chaucer, the poet, who wasthen asquire atrms, that"his ancest o rs ha d continually borne thecontestedcoat of armsfrom theConquest." Lord Scrope built t h e stat elycastle ofBolton,inRichmondshire, and died full of hours at the age ofseventy-th ree, 4thHenry IV, 1403. His name is among those of the peerswho assentedtothedepositio n o f Richa rd II: but his heir apparent, theEarlofWilts,sacrificed his life in the servic e o f that unfortunatesovereignand hisyounger son, Sir Stephen Scrope, adhered to thedethro ned monarc hwithadmirable fealty.
