THE LATE EARL OF AIRLIE -- Lord Airlie [David Graham Ogilvy, seventh Ea rl of Airlie] died on Sunday morning at the Windsor Hotel, at Denver, Co l. after only one day's illness. The cause was a congestive chill, occasi oned by contracting a sever cold. His body was embalmed and forwarded t he following evening to Dundee for burial at Cortachy castle , alongside h is ancestors. It will be accompanied by his son, Lord Ogilvy, [David Stan ley William Ogilvy] now the [eighth]earl of Airlie, who was with him at t he time of his death. The late earl was president of the Oregonian Railwa y, of the Dundee Mortgage Company, of the Oregon and Washington Mortgage B ank, of the Dundee Land Company, and of the Braine Cattle Company. He w as one of the originators and promoters of the Oregon Trust Company and ba nk in 1873, along with Mr. Wm. Reid, who was then United States cons ul at Dundee. He was a liberal in the house of lords, and a firm support er of Mr. Gladstone's government, and was one of those enlightened noblem en of Scotland who believed that in time the house of lords would be aboli shed in England. ; He was one of the sixteen representative peers of Scotla nd regularly sent to the house of lords by the votes of his brother pee rs of Scotland. He owned a greater portion of the Steven's donation la nd claim near Portland (Terwiliger's Addition) said to have been bought f or his daughter, Lady Maud Ogilvy, who visited this city with him last fal l. He was beloved by all his tenantry and last year gave them volunteer r eductions of their rents on account of bad crops in Scotland last year. H is several estates in Scotland will now go by heritary descent to his elde st son, the present earl, who under the late disentail acts of Great Brita in has power to dispose and sell these estates without the consent of h is own children. ; This death is much regretted by Mr. Reid, resident manag er of the institution at whose head Lord Airlie stood, as well as by all t he gentlemen connected with the enterprise."

"Airlie, POLK [county] This was the southern terminus of the narrow gau ge line of the Oregonian Railway Company, Limited. The tracks were subseq uently widened to standard gauge, and the property acquired by the Southe rn Pacific Company. The station was named for the Earl of Airlie of Scotl and. He was president of the Oregonian Railway Company, Limited, and visi ted Oregon during the course of construction. Most of the track on the Ai rlie branch was taken out in 1929."

A branch of my family lived in Airlie, OR years ago and they said the rail way was used to haul logs out of the woods in the area.
