Sir Henry Jerningham who died ca. 1571 was the son ofSirEdwardJernigan(d. 1515) and hi s s i fe Mary (Scroope). ; Sir Henrywasthefounder of theCotessy branch of the Jernigans in th e C o untyofNorfolk,England(Betham, The Baronetage of England, 1801-1803, p.232,table 33). Research shows that Sir Henry Jerningham achieved fame(ornotoriety)amongthe Jerningham g e n erations by adhering to the causeofQueenMary,daughter of Henry VIII of England. ; She suc c e ededherbrotherEdward VIand ruled from 1553-1558. Known as "Bloody Mary" shewasafanat i c alCatholic. She married Phillip II ofSpain,popularlyconsidered thearch-enemy of Engla n d . Her attempt torestoreEngland tothe Church ofRome ended in alienating her people and r ed ucingthecountry to acondition approaching anarchy. Sir HenryJerningham wasanardentsup p o rter, and he, with all his "tenantry",joined forces withherat Kenninghall in July, 15 5 3 . Sir Henry capturedYarmouth andralliedthe county of Norfolk to her cause. He theref o r estood high intheQueen's favor and became a member of the Privy Council.
When Queen Elizabeth came to the throne in 1558, Sir Henrywasdeprivedofhis high office s a n d all his manors and otherpropertieswereconfiscated.
Sir Henry Jerningham married Frances, dughter of Sir EdwardBaynham,andbyher had two so n s a nd two daughters; Henry who marriedEleanorDacres;William Francis; Mary who married ___ _ _________Southwell; andJeronimawho married _Waldgrave. It has been statedthat the childr e n of Henryand Eleanor (Dacres) Jernigan were the firstemigrants to theVirginiaColony, th a t i s, the first of the Jerninghamsin America.These sonswereThomas of Norwich, Norfolk Co . , E ngland andGeorge whomarried a MissPhilpot of Somerton, Norfolk County.

There were two, perhaps more, manors or "seats" of the Jerninghams.Onewasat Somerton , o n t he cost of Norfolk, about ten milesnorthofGreatYarmouth. It was a parish at one tim e , bu t the churchhasnowfallen into decay.
