LifeSketch: CHARLES HAMEL, son of Francois, was born around 1624, (Census of 1666). He married about 1651 Judith Auvray, who bore him a son, named Jean, in the year 1652 in France. When widowed he married Catherine Lemaistre on the 19th June 1656 in the parish of Saint-Jacques in Dieppe; she was 23. She bore him a son, Charles, in the year 1659 in Canada. You will find a copy of the marriage contract of Charles, father, at Dieppe in 1656 in the B>R>H> Nov. 1933, p. 698. The first notarial deed entered into by the Hamels was a contract to lease a farm, granted to Jean Hamel, brother of Charles, by Jean Gloria, on the 26th December 1656. (Z. Paquet). Charles Hamel, father, decided in 1662 to settle at Sainte-Foy, along the route Saint-Michel. There, he obtained a grant of wooded land, covering an area of sixty acres, from Rev. Father Jerome Lallement, S.J. (cf. Inventory of Charles, son, 23rd, April 1720). In the following year, on the 24th February 1663, a further 50 acres were added. (Inventory 1720). Where can we find these grants? They can be found easily on the Government Survey Map of 1685, p.42. (History of N. de Sainte-Foy, p. 394) The route of LaSuete going from Sainte-Foy to Champigny out across Charles Hamel's Lands at several points. (Lawsuit, 3rd January 1731, Cahiers des Grands Voyers). The log-house which Charles built, stood near the King's Road leading to Cap-Rouge. It measured forty feet long and twenty wide and was divided lengthwise into three rooms; the end one contained two wardrobes. (Z. Paquet). The following example of a charitable act performed by Charles Hamel, senior, and his spouse. They adopted an orphan, Little Francois Fauquees, aged seven and a half, "to help as a domestic servant" in return, "for his food and lodging and caring for him as their own child for nine years. He was to receive Christian Instruction for the good of his soul". (Fond Marchand-Hamel, 16th March 1677) Registrar G. Rageot. On the 25th Nov. 1676, Charles bought a house and the land on which it stood, for his second son Charles, Mr. Noel Piruet wold the property which was four acres along the front by twenty acres deep, reaching the Route Notre-Dame de Lorette, (Route Saint-{Paul). On the same day, his elder son Jean received a Promissory Note for a sum of money equal to "two hundred and sixty ponds of the City of Tours (no obsolete) (pount: 20 cents). Trgristry Officer: G. Rageot, (Z. Paquet). On the 8th Nov. 1677, he rented and then bought from Pierre Tochereau, two acres adjacent to his farm. (Lease of farm, Parcel Pingue to Charles Hamel. Registrar G. Ragot. The property of Charles Hamel, at Sainte-Foy, was now 6 acres along the front by 30 acres deep. According to the Census of 1681, Charles possessed 20 acres under cultivation and 4 head of cattle. This valiant popneer was still living on the 6th September 1711. (he was appointed expert Appraiser) Registrar Dubreuil. He was probably ninety years of age. There are no Records in Sainte-Foy from 1711 till 1721 included. With the deaths of Carles Hamel and his spouse Catherine Lemaitre we lost the ancestors of a rich offspring of Hamels in Canada. Some Parish Records were lost at the beginning of the Colony, we are therefore, obliged to give the date of marriage from the Registry Office Records, since all our ancestors were good Cristians, we are that they had their marriage in the church.
