He was 24 when he married and Hester was 17 Hester's parents disapproved of the marriage so soon after, Barton and Hester moved to California to seek gold. However when they arrived , they found California was not at all as they had expected, living conditions were very poor and over crowdedness proved to be a great obstacle. The newly wed couple decided to try their luck at the silver mines in Colorado. When they arrived there , they lived for a time in Leadville. Soon they settled in Lawson near Central City , where their first 3 children were born, two of whom died and are buried there in unmarked graves It was about this time that Barton and Hettie became acquainted with Horace Austin Warner Tabor the newly elected mayor of Leadsville, known as Haw Tabor. Haw was Instrumental in the organizing and settling of the area . He later became Lt. Governor of the State of Colorado. Barton and Hettie moved to Denver in 1883 Haw came earlier. Haw and Barton each liked their liquor and gambling and they seemed to have a great influence on each other . Barton being a successful businessman that he was for the times when he became involved in the game of chance at one of the gambling houses in town. His wife always knew when he had been gambling because he would whisle a jolly tune to cover up his deeds , especially when he lost. She attempted to change him but to no avail One day Hettie sent Harvey , their eldest son to the gambling house to bring Dad home. Barton flew into a rage and ordered him back home, but Harvey being a short boy and quiet just stood and waited. Fianlly Hettie went to Haw and the Mayor had papers drawn up barring Barton from any gambling houses. The man kept sneaking around and Haw said he would help , if she could find out where he was gambling and catch him in the act. She followed him, but their was a "look out " posted at the game above the store. Hettie called the Mayor and he came ,pushed the look out aside and walked in with Hettie. Haw scooped up the pot and gave all the money to Hettie who was able to get the family the food, clothing that they needed. Soon afterwards they went back to Pennsylvania for a visit. He got into the construction business. Taught school for a time after they moved to Leadville. He also worked with a construction crew installing cables up the mountain to the top of Pikes Peak. It was related by a family member that he worked on the guilding of the beautiful Capital Done in Denver. He was at 1 time a huckster, selling vegetables from door to door from a horse drawn wagon . Later he developed a reciepe for making horseradish sauce . He applied for and was granted a patent and labels for his bottles. They bought the Manson Hotel and made the lower floor into a factory , with upstairs as their living quarters.
