The Morris was soon transferred fro California to serve on convoy duty in the North Atlantic escorting ships bound for England. Jesse described the North Atlantic saying when you were on top of a wave you could look down on the top of other ships but when you were in a wave's trough you couldn't see anything. Jesse nearly met his end in the fall of 1941 during a severe North Atlantic storm when the Morris rolled 73 degrees taking water down her stack. Jesse said it took two hours to relight the boilers, rgain power and get the ship underway again.

Il est marié avec Anna Mae Bowling.
While working for the railroad, Jesse's youngest sister, Ann, introduced him to a girl who worked with her in the Sprouse Ritz store in Carlsbad. The girl's name was Anna Mae Bowling and she was soon to become Jesse's wife of 57 years. Jesse was 27 years old and Anna was 19 when they married on Sept. 1, 1950. Anna was the daughter of Edward Dudley (Ed) Bownling and Viola Bell (Padgett) Bowling who had moved their family to Carlsbad fro Wilburton, Okla., where Ed had worked in the coal mines.
At the time of his marriage the railroad was about to send his bridge crew back to Kansas so Jesse quit tha job, settled in Carlsbad and went to work in the potash mines. He worked first at Potash Corporation of America, later for US Potash and retired while working at Kerr McGee. Jesse believed in hard work and was never afraid of it. Even in times of illness he often worked 16 hour shifts. During his many years in the potash mines there were shutdowns, layoffs and labor strikes but Jesse always supported his family. When out of work at the mines Jesse again found work on a ranch near Mountainair and at one time moved to Lovington, N.M., where he worked in the oil fields. Jesse always put food on the table and his children always had everything they needed and more.
What is now known as Carlsbad Airport was an Army Air Field during World War II. After the war ended the barracks and other Army buildings were converted into a grocery store, a school house and what was known as Thayer Apartments where may families lived. Jesse and Anna began their married life there and didn't move into Carlsbad until their oldest child finished the first grade at Airfield School.
Ils se sont mariés le 1 septembre 1950 à Carlsbad, Eddy Cnty, New Mexico, USA, il avait 27 ans.
