Maud Matilda St Valerie |
Lord of Brecon, an ambitious lesser baron who rose in King John of England's service. He captured John's nephew Arthur, duke of Brittany, at Mirebeau in western France in 1202 and was rewarded with many lands and offices in South Wales, including the post of sheriff of Herefordshire (1206). His power was increasingly a threat to the crown, and in 1206 John began to curb it. The king tried to take William's sons hostage in 1208; William refused, and his family escaped to Ireland just ahead of soldiers sent to arrest them. He raised an unsuccessful rebellion in Wales (1210) and died an exile in France.
