Edward Plantagenet |
Daughter of Ferdinand III, king of Castile. In 1254 she married the future Edward I of England at Las Huelgas, near Burgos in Castile. In return Ferdinand granted Edward his lands and rights in Ponthieu and Montreuil and relinquished his claims to Gascony. Eleanor bore Edward 16 children, only seven of whom survived to adulthood, and accompanied him on all his travels until her death. In 1270 she went on crusade with Edward in the Holy Land and is said to have lamented so loudly when he was wounded by a Muslim poised dagger that the doctors ordered her to leave the room. Edward's devotion to his wife was shown by the mafnificent Eleanor crosses he built to her memory along the route her cortege followed from Lincoln to Westminster.
