Lochorwart Castle
Enfant(s):
Thomas de Borthwick is apparently the earliest known of this surname. His birthdate is unknown,[1] [2] but can be estimated.
Thomas Borthwick had a grant in the early 1330s of some lands "in near his burgh of Lauder", in Berwickshire, from Robert de Lawedre (Lauder) of Quarrelwood [and later of The Bass], in the reign of King David II [1329-1370]."[1] [2][3][4] Soon afterwards Thomas Borthwick was granted a charter from John of Gordon, Lord of that Ilk, of the half-lands of Legerwood in Lauderdale, Berwickshire.[5] In 1368 Alan de Lawedre (who was hereditary baillie of Lauderdale) appeared in Parliament as Procurator for William de Borthwick, son and heir of [this] Thomas de Borthwick.[6]
Family
Thomas' wife and issue is unknown apart from one son who succeeded him, William.[1][2]
It is said that the ancestor of the noble house of Borthwick was one Andreas [Andrew], a son of the Lord of Burtick in Livonia, who had been in Hungary [probably fighting the Turks] who accompanied Edgar Atheling and his two sisters from that place to Scotland in 1067, and obtained possession of some lands. His posterity, accordingly (with alterations/Anglicisation of the spelling), assumed the surname of Borthwick.[7]
As his son and heir William was in possession of his inheritance by 1378 it is assumed Thomas has died.
Research Notes
Not all sources with sections on the Borthwick origins cite Thomas as the first of the family. Some start with his son William, 1st of Borthwick.
Those include:
The Peerage[8]
Clan Borthwick (official site)[9]
Some unsourced trees show a father and son named Thomas Borthwick. All known sources indicate just a single Thomas Borthwick at the beginning of this line. The estimated birth dates of these profiles included 1292 and 1316 that were most likely derived from events of descendents.
