Biography
From: "The Ashcraft Family" by Martha Ashcraft Neal:
"The second son, Daniel (b. 1698) is the one to have fled to eastern Pennsylvania, possibly via New Jersey of Maryland, after killing an Indian. An entry from Hempstead's Diary states 'Sunday, jun 12, 1720 I was on Jry of inquest upon ye indian which died last night of ye wound he rec'd of Daniel Ashcraft on Thursday last on his forehead with a stone. Another entry reported on the results of the trial: Friday, Sep 10, Daniel Ashcrft brought in not guilty. Daniel's brothers, Jedediah and Uriah, according to Hempstead's Diary, also had brushes with the law. On Jan 19, 1733-4, it was related that he had to go to tpwn to make bail for Jedediah Ashcraft, and on March 15, 1733-4 he was in court all day while Uriah Ashcraft was being tried for his life for murdueing a stranger, Dennis Wilkenson. Uriah was acquited."
"Shortly after the trial, Daniel left Connecticut. In 1726 he was in Wrightstown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
On the 10 May 1732 Daniel was in Wrightstown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (near the Delaward River), selling 220 acres of land to William Allen for 200 pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania. This act would indicate that Daniel had been here for several years. Again on 14 June 1734 he sold another 120 acres for 160 pounds to William Allen pf Philedelphia. This tract was described as containing houses, barns, buildings, gardens, orchards on Neshaniny Creek adjoining Richard Mitchell and Jonathan Cooper. This attractive sounding piece of land was south of Wrightstown close to Philedelphia. Again on 24 October 1737 Daniel Ashcraft granted to James Dean 120 acres of land in Wrightstown - this land had been purchased from Dennis and Peter Pursell. James Dean sold this same land 26 Feb 1742/3 to Ichabod Wilkerson.
Family tradition dictated that Daniel married Elizabeth Lewis, circa 1723, but no evidence of this marriage has been found, although there is ample proof that he was married to an 'Elizabeth'.
We next find evidence of Daniel and his family in the Sleepy Creek area of what is now West Virginia.
Daniel's last land transaction took place in 1755 and between then and Oct 9 of that year he was killed by Indians. The encounter that he had with the Indians was documented by the newspaper.
The 'Maryland Gazette' of Thursday, 9 Oct 1755 reports, 'Daniel Ashloff (sic), who lived near Town Creek, a few miles this side of Col Thomas Cresap's says that he and his father (Daniel) and others were attacked by Indians, who killed all but Daniel (son of Daniel). Mr Stoddert wanted to go in pursuit but the others would not. He has applied to Major Prather for a detachment of militia. Less than a year later The 'Maryland Gazette' reports the death of more family members. A letter from Col Cresap mentions Indians killing Abraham Johson, Jacob Ashcraft (Mary Johnson's husband) and James Lowry, a peddlar. Daniel Ashcraft is missing. "
