Hannah was heir to John Bushrod II, and she inherited Bushfield Plantation. She also inherited the majority of her father's slaves.[2]
African-American Bushrods
By the time Hannah inherited Bushfield, she had married to John Augustine Washington, and he became the overseer of the plantation and slaves. The slaves were given the name "Bushrod." Most of them were kept in the family, as offspring were given to Hannah's children when they either "came of age" or married. In fact, the oldest known African-American Bushrod, James Bushrod, belonged to Hannah's daughter, Jane, and her husband, William Augustine Washington.[2] James was born ca 1750; he was married to Cary, and they had four known children: General, West (Wesley), Brooks, and Matilda.[2] It is also believed they had more children who were separated from the family; those connections are now lost to history.[2]
Death and Legacy
