He was in good hea lth unt il the Sunday preceding his death, when he sustained a paralyti c stroke, w hich was followed by a second and fatal one Monday afternoo n. He was the o ldest surviving citizen and one of the original settler s of Menomine e. He and late John Murray were the first permanent whit e settlers to ent er the township, which they did in 1847. \par Mr. Manneman was a native of Germany and came to this country and to Ga le na in 1846, at the age of 33. Engaging in farming, he made a succe s s of it and died possessed of a fine farm and extensive property beside s . He was married in his native land in 1843 to Miss Mary A. Stockel, a s i ster of the late J. H. Stockel of Vinegar Hill. A year ago last Four t h of July they celebrated their golden wedding. Seven children survive w i th her: They are Mrs. G. H. Brinker of Breda, Iowa, Mrs. C. Artz of Ca rr oll, Iowa, John Manneman, of Keutner, Iowa, Joseph of Mt. Carmel, Io wa, Mr s. Mary Kuhl of Menominee, A. C. Manneman of Carroll, Iowa and F rank, of P ortland, Oregon. All the children except John and Frank wer e with their f ather when he passed away. \par The funeral of Clemens Manneman was held Monday forenoon from St. Mary' s C atholic church at Menominee, where services were conducted by Rev. J . Halb maier. He was the oldest survivor citizen and one of the o rigin al settlers of Menominee. He and the late John Murray were the f irst whi te settlers to enter the township which they did in 1847. The d eceased w as a native of Germany and came to this country and settled i n Galena in 1 846 at the age of 33. Thence he went to Menominee and la ter, with his s on Bernard, opened a carpenter and blacksmith shop. Th is son preceded h im to the grave two years ago. He is survived by his w ife and seven child ren; three daughters, Mrs. C. Artz and Mrs. Brinker o f Carroll, Iowa, a nd Mrs. Kuhl of Menominee, four sons, Gus, Frank, Jo hn and Joseph, all mar ried and residing in Carroll, Iowa.
