Notes from Branchlandia on Osborne, and the text The Osbornes, by Elizabeth J. "Betty" Harrell.

...Christopher Branch....in 1639...his immediate neighbor, Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale,". [pp.27-28]

....Benjamin Branch, as the executor of Edward Osborne. [p.40]

....about the year 1695 Benjamin Branch of Henrico, had married Tabitha Osborne, the elder daughter of Edward Osborne of Henrico. [p.40]

By Tabitha Osborne, Benjamin Branch of Henrico had issue:
I. Benjamin Branch of Chesterfield, born about the year 1700. [p.41]

....Benjamin Branch, more lately of Chesterfield County, appeared in the Orphans' Court in
the April of 1712, and chose as his guardian his uncle, on the maternal side, Edward Osborne of Henrico. [p.41]

Benjamin Branch of Chesterfield married, prior to 1727, his second cousin, Mary Osborne, the elder daughter of Thomas Osborne of Henrico, whom he survived.

By Mary Osborne, Benjamin Branch of Chesterfield had issue:
I. MaryBranch, who survived her father, and probably died unmarried.
II. Martha Branch, who died, presumably unmarried, before 1760.
III. Captain Benjamin Branch of "Willow Hill," in Chesterfield County.
IV. Thomas Branch of Manchester Parish, in Chesterfield County, who died unmarried in the latter part of 1778. [p.43]

It appears that the testator had previously deeded the other half-interest in this same mill to his oldest son, Captain Benjamin Branch, of "Willow Hill....in eastern Chesterfield, on what was part of the land originally patented, in 1625, by Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale."
This Thomas Osborne was an ancestor both of the mother and of the wife of Benjamin Branch of Chesterfield.... [p.44]

Captain Benjamin Branch "of Willow Hill" had mar-
ried, about 1755, Mary (Goode?), who probably survived him, or, at least, died later than 1782.
By Mary (Goode?), Captain Benjamin Branch of "Willow Hill" had issue:
I. Benjamin Branch of Chesterfield, who married Elizabeth Osborne, the daughter of Edward Osborne of Chesterfield, and by her had issue.
II. Edward Branch, of Chesterfield, who likewise left issue.
III. Anne Branch, who married Jones of Chesterfield.
IV. Thomas Branch, of "Willow Hill."
V. Obedience Branch. [pp.46-47]

Benjamin Branch of Henrico married, about 1695, Tabitha Osborne, the oldest child and daughter of Edward Osborne of Henrico.
Tabitha Osborne was born about 1677, and had by her first husband, apparently, but one child, Benjamin Branch of Chesterfield ; and after the death of Benjamin Branch of Henrico, she remarried, ante 1711, taking for her second husband Thomas Cheatham of Henrico, by whom it is not recorded that she left any issue. [p.113]

Tabitha Osborne was a descendant of Captain Thomas Osborne of Coxendale, in Henrico.
This county, it is necessary to repeat, then comprised all the land west of Charles City between the Chickahominy and the Appomattox.
Thomas Osborne was born in England, about the year 1590, but left England for the Colony of Virginia in 1619, sailing in "the Bona Nova, of 200 tons, sent August, 1619, with 120 persons".... [p.113]

....the Muster of 16th February, 1623-4, mentions Thomas Osborne as living at the College Land.
And, again, the Muster of January, 1624-5, enumerates among the inhabitants of the College Land :
"Lietenfit Thomas Osborne, arrived in the Bona Nova, 1619." [p.114]

Meantime, Thomas Osborne had settled, in the year 1625, at "Coxendale," on the south side of James River in the extreme northeast of the present Chesterfield County, and corresponding to the present "Cox's Dale." [pp. 114-115]

...it is not unnatural that this close proximity in a sparsely-settled country should have resulted in many marriages between the families of Branch and Osborne. [p.115]

....Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale" was alive as late as 1667; and of Captain Thomas Osborne there is in the scant records of the time no further mention. [p.116]

Nor is there in the Virginia records at any time even a casual mention of his wife. A legitimate son, one Thomas or EdWard Osborne, and born before 1620, Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale" had beyond question; and inasmuch as Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale" brought no wife or child to Virginia in 1619, and was at the period of his emigration a man of thirty or upwards, it is not extravagant to suppose that the wife of Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale" had died before this, in England, and that he subsequently sent back to England for his only son, since that son attestedly was living in Virginia before the year 1640. [p.116]

The will of Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale" is not recorded at Henrico Court-House. A will he indisputably left, apportioning his estate between his two grandsons, and inasmuch as the county records of Henrico previous to the year 1677 have perished, and from that year exist in tolerable fullness, the fact is pretty clearly established that Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale" died before 1678 ; and, as has been previously shown, later than the November of 1667.
He had issue, so far as known, only one child, a son, whom he survived.
Edward Osborne of Henrico. [pp.116-117]

This only son of Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale" was, perhaps, the Thomas Osborne of "Pasbeheighes," referred to in the " Muster of the Inhabitants of Pasbehays, belonging to the corporation of James City, and in the maine," taken 30th January, 1624-5.
This mentions among "The men of the Governor's Men at Pasbehaighs" one "Thomas Osborn, aged 18 (came to Virginia), in the Francis Bonaventure." [p.117]

....the probabilities are rather in favor of this son of Captain Thomas Osborne having been the
Edward Osborne of Henrico who patented (2nd June, 1636) some 400 acres of land in Henrico County·Äî"adjoining a swamp called the great swamp, and the river".... [p.118]

The son of Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale," whatever may have been his Christian name, died in Virginia about the year 1650·Äîcertainly not earlier than 1646·Äîhaving had issue:
I. Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale," born 1641, with whom we shall hereafter have to do.
II. EdwardOsborneofHenrico. [pp.118-119]

Edward Osborne of Henrico, the younger son of the foregoing, was born in 1646.
At the death of Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale," his estate was divided between his two grandsons·Äî both of whom had survived their father.... [p.119]

....He died about the beginning of the year 1697....[p.119]

Edward Osborne of Henrico married, prior to 1676, Tabitha Piatt, the daughter of Gilbert Piatt.... [p.119]

By Tabitha Piatt, Edward Osborne of Henrico had issue :
I. Tabitha Osborne, who, as previously recorded, married Benjamin Branch of Henrico.
II. Edward Osborne of Henrico, born post 1677, and died in 1732, leaving issue.
III. Martha Osborne. [p.120]

The will of Edward Osborne of Henrico County, in the Parish of Varina, is recorded at Henrico Court-House. It is dated 6th of January, 1696, and was recorded 1st of April, 1697. [p.120]

....I give to my daughter, Martha Osborne... [p.120]

....the younger Edward Osborne when he reaches the age of nineteen. [p.121]

....daughter, Tabitha Osborne Branch, now married to Benjamin Branch of Henrico, is not mentioned in the will....it is deducible that the testator had previously provided for her.... [p.121]

....son-in-law, Benjamin Branch, to be his executor.... [p.121]

Tabitha Platt Osborne was born about 1660, and died between the years 1692 and 1695, being survived by her husband.
To him, as recorded, she had borne two daughters and a son. [p.122]

Benjamin Branch of Chesterfield married, prior to the year 1727, his second cousin, Martha Osborne, the daughter of Thomas Osborne of Henrico. She was born about 1710, and died before the year 1760.
This Martha Osborne was a descendant of Captain Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale," who, as previously recorded, had issue :
I. (Edward?)Osborne of Henrico.
(Edward?) Osborne of Henrico, as previously recorded, had issue:
I. Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale."
II. Edward Osborne of Henrico. [p.131]

Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale" was the older son of his father, (Edward?) Osborne of Henrico, and was born in the year 1641. [p.131]

Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale" at his death left 1692. He had married Martha (?), whose maiden name is unknown.
Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale " at his death left issue:
I. Thomas Osborne of the Parish and County of Henrico.
II. John Osborne, born post 1674. [p.132]

The will of Thomas Osborne of "Coxendale" is recorded at Henrico Court-House. It is dated 2d of October, 1691, and was recorded 1st June, 1692. [p.132]

Thomas Osborne of Henrico died in the earlier half of 1733. [p.138]
He had married, before the year 1691....and presumably before 1689, Martha Branch, the widow of John Branch of Henrico (the son of William Branch, and the grandson of Christopher Branch of "Kingsland"), and the daughter of Thomas Jones of Bermuda Hundreds.
By this Martha Jones, Thomas Osborne of Henrico had issue:
I. Thomas Osborne of Henrico.
II. Edward Osborne of Henrico.
III. Mary Osborne, who, as previously recorded, married Benjamin Branch of Chesterfield.
IV. Elizabeth Osborne, who died unmarried before the year 1730.
V. Cicely Osborne. [pp.137-138]

===========================
Notes from The Osbornes, Elizabeth J. "Betty" Harrell.

Thomas Osborne arrived at Jamestown in the Col- ony of Virginia on November 4, 1619. [p.1]

The 3-month voyage on board the Bona Nova.... [P.1]

by 1625 was the lieutenant in charge of the College Lands....Later, he was promoted to the rank of captain andwasgranted the large Coxendale plantation, which was to be the home of the Osbornes for at least the next five generations. [P.1]

In 1624, King James I dissolved the London Com- pany and made Virginia a crown colony. [p.3]

Thomas Osborne returned to the College Lands and in 1625, as seen in the muster taken on January 23, 1624/25, was the lieutenant in charge. [p.3]

Thomas Osborne gained the respect of his neighbors and in 1625 was elected to represent his area at the House of Burgesses in Jamestown. [p.4]

....probably in the early 1630s, Captain Thomas1Osborne's son Thomas Osborne Jr. and presumed son Edward Osborne arrived in the colony and patented land nearby. [p.5]

Son Thomas Osborne Jr. in 1637 received 500 acres adjoining Coxendale
[13] and presumed son Edward Osborne in 1636 was granted 400 acres across the river north of Cox- endale.[14] [p.5]

Children of Thomas Osborne:
THOMAS2OSBORNE (c. l610s?-by l666) P- 7
Edward Osborne (c. l610s?- )(presumed) P- 5

Edward Osborne, if the son of Thomas Osborne, was born probably in the 1610s in England, where he apparently spent his teenage years. By 1636 he had joined his presumed father in Virginia. [p.5]

....on June 2, 1636, was patented 400 acres in Henrico County across the James River from the plantation of his presumed father. [p.5]

Nothing further is known about this Edward or his children, if he had any. He may have returned to England, or been killed in the massacre of 1644, or simply died without heirs. The only Osbornes of the next generation living in Henrico County were Thomas^Osborne, proved son of Thomas2Osborne, and Edward Osborne, who lived on land adjoining Thomas^Osborne, thus probably a brother. [p.6]

#####
THOMAS OSBORNE (c. l610s - c. l650s)

Thomas Osborne , son of Captain Thomas Osborne of Coxendale (also called Fearing), was probably born in England around 1610. By 1637, he had joined his father in Henrico (now Chesterfield) County, in the Colony of Virginia.... [p.7]

Thomas2Osborne married; however, the name of his wife is not known. The marriage most likely occurred after his arrival in Virginia, since no wife was named as a headright. [p.7]

About 1641 son Thomas3Osborne was born, followed five years later by son Edward Osborne. The names of the daughters, if any, are not known; however, one of them may have married a Turpin. [pp 7-8]

Thomas2Osborne, who had undoubtedly heard his father talk of the Indian Massacre of 1622, wit- nessed the massacre on April 18, 1644.... [p.8]

The Motherland was also having troubles; in 1648KingCharlesIwasbeheaded. Forthenext twelve years Cromwell and Parliament ran England. Many pro-king cavaliers fled to Virginia, whichwas the last British colony to submit. [p.8]

Children of Thomas2Osborne:

########
Edward Osborne, son of Thomas2Osborne, was born about 1646. [p.9]

In 1679 he and Thomas30sborne, listed together, were the only Osbornes on the Henrico County tithes list. [p.9]

Edward Osborne, as the younger son, did not receive the formal education that his brother Thomas-3Osborne received, for Edward signed his documents with his mark "EO", whereas his brother signed his full name. [p.9]

Edward Osborne married twice. By his first wife, whose name is not known, he had three children: Tabitha, Martha and Edward Osborne. [p.9]

Edward Osborne apparently was a kind, helpful man, aiding people in need. He handled the estate and funeral of a Mr. Whitman, who died at Edward's home in 1689, leaving no will nor relations.[9] He also cared for Gilbert Piatt who in 1692 left Edward most of his estate in consideration of the trouble and care Edward had given him in his sick- ness. [p.9]

In 1694 Edward Osborne found a seaman floating in the James River and had to testify in court. By so doing, Edward's age has been preserved for posterity, for the clerk recorded with the deposition that Edward was then about age 48. [p.10]

That same year [1694], Edward Osborne married second Mrs. Elizabeth (Shippy) Brown; their marriage license was issued June 15, 1694. Elizabethwas the daughter of Thomas and Martha Shippy (her mother later married Edward Stratton.)[15] Elizabeth's first husband, Jeremiah Brown, who had a plantation at Varina and was the keeper of the county ferry, had died in 1690. [p.10]

In 1695 Edward Osborne's eldest daughter, Tabitha, married their neighbor Benjamin Branch, the 30-year-old bachelor of Kingsland immediately north of the Osbornes. [p.10]

Edward Osborne had not much longer to live. On June 6, 1696, he wrote his will stating that he was sick and weak. Hediedthefollowingyearatabout the age of 51. [p.10]

He left to his son Edward all the land.... [p.10]

....to his daughter Martha livestock and miscellaneous items. [p.10]

Samuel Branch, Martha Osborne, and Joseph Tanner witnessed the will which was probated in court on April 1, 1697. [p.11]

#########
THOMAS OSBORNE (C. 1641 - 1692)

Thomas3Osborne, son of Thomas2Osborne, was born about 1641 [1] in Henrico (now Chesterfield) County, Virginia, and reared on his father's Coxendale plantation, where he lived his entire life. [p.15]

As the eldest son, Thomas Osborne was better educated than his younger brother Edward, who did not sign his name but put his mark on documents. [p.15]

In the middle 1660s [2] Thomas30sborne married; however, no record has been found of his wife's name. She may have been a sister of HenryBailey who died in 1667 leaving five children:
Thomas, Henry, Mary, Siselie and Ann Bailey. Per Henry's will, daughter Siselie was to be cared for by John Davis, daughter Ann by John Perrin and younger son Henry by his sister Mary, if not by her then by "brother" Thomas Osborne....Brother often meant brother-in-law. Actually, Thomas' wife may have been named Siselie Bailey, for Thomas Osborne named a daughter Sisely Osborne. [pp 15-16]

Jane Gower (who married first William Baugh Jr.; second William Branch and third Abel Gower [17]) was the mother-in-law of Martha Branch who married Thomas3Osborne that same year. [p.18]

Thomas3Osborne was about 47 when he married in 1688 the 26-year-old widow Martha Branch. [p.18]

Thomas and Martha Osborne (Branch) were to have one son, John Osborne. p.18]

In 1691, Thomas Osborne Sr. with brother Edward Osborne, Thomas Jefferson and Joseph Tanner were appointed to appraise the estate of John Cole, and the following year with son Thomas4Osborne and Richard Liggon he witnessed the will of Gilbert Piatt. [p.20]

In 1692, Thomas Osborne died apparently suddenly. On May 16th he and his son Thomas Osborne had gone to Varina to attend the grand jury; with- in two weeks he had died. [p.20]

He had been in perfect health the previous fall, when on October 2, 1691, he wrote his will, which Thomas Jefferson, Philip Turpin, Samuel Branch and Samuel Hickman witnessed. On June 1, 1692, the will was probated in the Henrico County court. He had appointed his wife Martha executrix. [pp. 20-21]

The dwelling house and orchard went to his widow Martha....Son Thomas4 Osborne was then married and in his late 20s. Son John Osborne, about age 3, received 295 adjoining acres....[p.21]

Children of Thomas and Martha (?) Branch Osborne:
John Osborne (c. l689 - 1743) m2 Mrs. Edith (Harris) Trent
[pp. 23-24]

THOMAS4OSBORNE (c. l660s - 1733)

THOMAS4OSBORNE, only son of Thomas3Osborne and his first wife, was born in Henrico (now Chesterfield) county...and was reared on his father's Coxendale Plantation. He lived his entire life in Henrico county, dying in 1733. [p.25]

About 1688 [2] Thomas4Osborne married Martha Jones, daughter of Thomas^- and Mary (Repps?) Jones. Thomas4 and Martha Osborne settled on his father's Coxendale plantation. Here they reared their six children: Thomas , Mary, Martha, Edward, Elizabeth and Sisely. The land became officially his when his father died in 1692. [p. 25]

Four years after his father's death, Thomas Osborn sold 200 acres of his land to his uncle Edward Osborne. [p.25]

...son Thomas5Osborne married and settled on his father's land. Daughter Mary Osborne married her second cousin Benjamin Branch and probably lived on the Kingsland plantation north of Coxendale. Daughter Martha Osborne may have married Thomas Lockett before her early death prior to 1731. Son Edward Osborne was apparently still single in 1731, but later married. Daughter Elizabeth Osborne died as a young women, still single, and daughter Sisely Osborne, who was possibly mentally retarded or simple-minded, remained at home. [p.27]

The date of wife Martha's death is not known. She had died by February of 1730/31, when Thomas4 Osborne, a widower in his 60s, wrote his will. [p. 27]

On January 5, 1732/33, Thomas4Osborne with his son Thomas Osborne sold to Thomas Friend 50 acres which adjoined the land of his half-brother John Osborne and Matthew Turpin. [p.28]

Thomas4Osborne probably died in May of 1733, since his will was proved in the June 1733 court. He left to his son Thomas5Osborne....and left to his son Edward Osborne....[p.28]

Thomas4Osborne willed his [slaves]....to son Thomas Osborne....to son Thomas Osborne....to daughter Mary Branch....to granddaughter Mary Branch....to granddaughter Martha Branch....to granddaughter Martha Osborne...Thomas Osborne was especially concerned about his daughter Sisely and instructed his sons and daughter Mary to contribute 20 shillings annually for her support.[p.28]
