George Hay, 7th Earl of Erroll was the son of Thomas Hay and Margaret Logie.2 He married, firstly, Margaret Robertson, daughter of Alexander Robertson of Struan and Isobel Stewart, circa 12 November 1528.2 He married, secondly, Helen Bruce, daughter of Walter Bruce, circa 12 June 1561.3,2 He died on 30 January 1573/74.2
George Hay, 7th Earl of Erroll succeeded to the title of 8th Lord Hay [S., 1430] on 11 April 1541.2 He succeeded to the title of 7th Earl of Erroll [S., 1452] on 11 April 1541.1,2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Central Scotland in 1559.2 In 1567 he refused to officiate as Lord High Constable at king James IV's coronation, in support for Mary, Queen of Scots.2 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) George Hay, 7th Earl of Erroll was the son of Thomas Hay and Margaret Logie. He married, firstly, Margaret Robertson, daughter of Alexander Robertson, 9th of Glenerochie and Lady Elizabeth Stewart, circa 12 November 1528.
He married, secondly, Helen Bruce, daughter of Walter Bruce, circa 12 June 1561.
George was served heir to his mother and seised in the barony of Logiealmond in Oct. 1536.[3] He succeeded to the title of 7th Lord Hay and to the title of 7th Earl of Erroll on 11 April 1541.[4],[1] He was served heir to his cousin William, Earl of Erroll in the lordship and barony of Erroll which had been in the King's hands for over 19 years.[5] He had charters to the lordship of Erroll and to the lands and baronies of Capeth, Inchiref and Fossoquhy, Perthshire, Cowrie in Kincardine, Cassingray in Fife, and Dronlaw in Forfar, all of which was made into the barony of Erroll 5 Dec. 1541. On 13 Dec. 1541 he received charters to the barony of Slains, Aberdeenshire, Innerpeffer, Forfarshire and the office of constabulary.[6] He granted a bond to pay 4,000 marks to the King to secure Helen, Countess of Erroll, 400 marks yearly, and to marry his oldest son to Jean Hay the last earl's only daughter dated 2 Sept. 1541.[7]
He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Central Scotland between the water of Erne and the north water on 22 July 1559 and in 1562 he was appointed along with several others to resist the Earl of Huntly. [8] In 1567 he refused to officiate as Lord High Constable at king James IV's coronation, in support for Mary, Queen of Scots.[1] He was invested as a Privy Counsellor for Scotland.[1]
He died on 30 January 1573/74.
