He was the son of Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona and Petronilla of Aragon and the first King of Aragon who was also Count of Barcelona.

    Alfons war ein Sohn des Königs Alfons II. von Aragón und dessen Gemahlin Sancha von Kastilien, sowie ein j√ºngerer Bruder des aragonesischen Königs Peter II.
    Er wurde von seinem Vater 1185 zum Mitgraf der Provence erhoben und regierte dabei zusammen mit seinen Onkeln Raimund Berengar und Sancho. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters regierte er ab 1196 allein.
    Den Manuskripten des Troubadours Gaucelm Faidit zufolge, soll er ein Rivale um die Liebe der Jourdaine d'Embrun gewesen sein.
