He appears in all the old genealogies as "Y Gwion," but this is essentially meaningless; Darrell Wolcott considers it to be a corruption of "y wyrion," of "grandson." In that case, it would mean that a grandfather was still alive when he was born and named (an unusual occurrence), and since his paternal grandfather was Ithel, Wolcott believes that to be his name.
He succeeded to Ial and Ystrad Alun, but lost most of his lands to Gruffudd Maelor ap Madog ap Maredudd, king of northern Powys.
