"Francesco Balbani, born 1 July 1481 and died 2 August 1556. He attended
school until 1495 when his father died. His uncle and guardian Paolo
Balbani then formed a company for the manufacture of silk cloth, with
Francesco and his brother Agostino Balbani and Michele Burlamacchi as
partners, and began to train Francesco and Paolo's own son Nicccolo for
mercantile careers.
"Niccolo left the firm in 1504 and Francesco assumed sole responsibility
for management of the business and performed his duties skillfully and
diligently. The business involved trade between Lucca, Lyon, Bruges and
Antwerp.
"When the partnership with Burlamacchi was dissolved in 1524, the
brothers Francesco and Agostino realized a profit of 17,000 ducats, on
their original investment of 2,600 ducats. Over the years they had also
withdrawn 4,000 ducats to provide a dowry of 800 ducats for each of their
five sisters, and Agostino had withdrawn a total of 2,000 ducats for
himself.
"Francesco then opened a shop in Lucca with Agostino as his partner,
Francesco's investment being 10,000 ducats and Agostino's 5,000.
Following Agostino's death in 1534, Francesco continued to manage the
firm, with his nephews as owners of Agostino's share.
"The form of the business was altered from time to time and in January
1548, a great commercial network was set up, with the help of the
Bernardini, with an investment of 90,000 scudi, divided in five parts.
In Lucca there were two shops for manufacturing silk, with capital of
20,000 scudi each, and a bank with capital of 10,000 scudi. At Lyon,
there was a branch with capital of 20,000 scudi, and at Antwerp another
branch with the same capital. Besides the silk trade, the family
imported goods from Bordeaux at Antwerp and handled some maritime
insurance. At Lyon, they participated in some of the loans to the French
crown. Occasionally, the failure of another merchant caused some losses
in their own business, but over all, their ventures were successful,
particularly during the lifetime of Francesco. In 1555 the firm was
reorganized, probably without the Bernardini, and Francesco returned to
Lucca. There were still three branches in Lucca and one each in Lyon and
Antwerp.
"From 1508 until his death, Francesco held many offices in the Republic
of Lucca. He served numerous times in the Council General, twelve times
as Anziano, and six as Gonfaloniere di Giustizia. In addition he served
in special offices as needed or in offices provided for by statute. In
1524 he was part of the deputation that met John the Duke of Albania, who
held the Lucchese country for ransom.
"He was twice elected Rector of the school at Lucca. In 1550, he was
elected to the Uffizio della Religione, which was responsible for
overseeing and suppressing heresy in the city. The same year he was on a
commission to compile a new statute for the Gabbella Maggiore of the
city.
"In September 1508, Francesco was married to Maddalena Mei, daughter of
Tommaso Mei, who survived him. They had several sons who carried on the
family business after the death of their father."2 SOUR S67
