ISAAC WOOD OF HARFORD COUNTY, MD.
(Compiled and contributed by Clifford and Martha Wood Hardin, 10 Roan
Lane, St. Louis, MO)
ISAAC WOOD's will was signed and witnessed 29 April 1776 in Harford
County, MD. In the census for Harford county, MD, for 1776, ISAAC WOOD
is listed as age 85. His wife, ELIZABETH (dau of Edward and Elizabeth
Wilbourne), is listed as age 70. It appears that ISAAC died soon after
he made his last will.
Based on provisions in the will, the following seems apparent concerning
his children:
1. ISAAC, JR. was the oldest son. Young ISAAC was living in Washington
Co., PA, 8 Sep 1788 when he signed an indenture granting "clear title" to
land in Harford County, MD, to his younger brother, MOSES.
2. JAMES, the second son, was given 65 acres of land in Harford Co.
3. WILLIAM, by order of listing appears to have been the third son.
4. BENJAMIN.
5. MOSES appears to have been the youngest son. From family records, we
know that he was born 16 Aug 1741 and that he died in Martin Co., IND, 3
June 1823. He was listed in the 1783 Tax List of Harford Co., MD, as
living in Susquehannah Hundred with property valued at $15,000. It was
not listed among those who took "the oath of fidelity" in Harford Co. in
1777. MOSES was married sometime during the 1780s to JANE DICKSON, widow
of DAVID DICKSON, who died in Harford Co. in 1778. She had two young
sons who were mentioned in her husband's will: Robert and John Dickson.
(The Census of 1790, Harford Co. lists MOSES WOOD as "head of family"
with one female adult and four male children. These include the two
DICKSON stepsons and JAMES S. WOOD, son of MOSES and JANE. The identity
of the fourth child is not known.
In his will ISAAC WOOD mentions two daughters:
6. HANNAH, who married JAMES SEAL. They were living in Harford Co. in
1782 when they sold land to MOSES WOOD.
7. MARY, who married JAMES EAGON. They were living in Monogahala Co.,
PA, in 1782, when they sold land to MOSES WOOD. Monogahala Co. no longer
exists, but it was located in the most southwestern corner of the state.
(James Eagon and Mary (Wood) Eagon were in later records in Greene Co.,
PA.)
ISAAC WOOD's will also mentions two granddaughters, HANNAH COWEN and
ELIZABETH HAYES. According to one indenture, ISAAC WOOD obtained land
known as "Wood's Meadows" in Susquehannah Hundred, Harford Co., MD, 1 May
1756 (reference is made in the indenture to Records of Baltimore County;
Harford County was not set off from Baltimore County until 1773.)
The 1783 Tax List, Susquehannah Hundred, lists ELIZABETH WOOD as owning
125 acres called "Wood's Meadows" and 78 acres of Coconut Ridge. There
is no will on file in Harford County.
The land purchased by MOSES WOOD from his sisters in 1782 was also part
of "Wood's Meadows."

David Dickson's will dated 19 Dec 1778.
