Arnould IV d'Ardres (died around 1176) Arnould IV d'Ardres, known as Colvède or Colewide , because originally lord of the place located on Pihen-lès-Guînes , then viscount of Markènes ( Marck en Calaisis ), by succession of his brothers, acceded to the seigneury of Ardres in 1146, because of his marriage to Adeline or Adelvie Ardres, daughter of Arnould II and sister and heiress of Baldwin I st . He is the son of Elembert I er , lord of Marck and Colewide, Lieutenant Viscount or the Count of Guines, hence the title of Viscount of Marck and his second wife Adeline of Licques , the Old daughter of Eustache , lord of Licques [ 55 ]. By his marriage, he becomes the heir of the whole house of Ardres
It is named in various charters of the Abbey of Andres [ 54 ] . The name of his land or viscount of Marck is found under various names Marcanes, Marcnes, Marckes, ... [ 55 ] .
He is lord of Ardres from 1146 to 1176. He paid tribute to immediately Arnould I st of Guines , received the consent of the other peers of the barony, and he pays tribute to Sibylla of Anjou , wife of Thierry of Alsace , Count of Flanders, still in Palestine , to relieve from her all the lands received from his wife both in Ardres and in the chatellenie of Bruges [ 56 ]. However, he must face the hostility of Baudouin de Vormezeele, or Varneselle, son of Agnès d'Ardres, lord of Varneselle and Harselle, who also claims the lordship, as the son of the eldest daughter of Arnoul II. Adeline d'Ardres, wife of Arnould IV and sister of Agnès, bought her withdrawal by paying her 100 silver marks [ 13 ] , especially since Agnès d'Ardres had died long before her brother Baudouin, the succession therefore went to his still living sister Adeline.
Arnould was a peaceful lord of Ardres whose name and arms he bore [ 57 ] . He sometimes qualifies himself as Viscount of Ardres because he was Viscount of Marck and Guînes, sometimes of Arnould d'Ardres, as in a title of the Abbey of Andres [ 57 ] . Around 1149, he declares that he and his wife granted to the abbey of Clairmarais the tithe of the lands dependent on their farm of Nieuwerlede ( Nieurlet ), which they had acquired from Elbodon de Nothoth [ 58 ] .
Thierry, Abbot of La Chapelle had introduced monks from his abbey into the Saint-Omer d'Ardres church instead of the canons who were there. Arnould built a chapel with a few houses near the Brasmes ( Brêmes ) mill , and installed other monks there under the obedience of a prior named Caradocus. In 1176 he attached the chapel he had founded to the chapter of Ardres [ 59 ] . Then transferred the religious to the city of Ardres with all their buildings and ordered that they stay near the cemetery church [ 60 ] .
Arnould IV builds the fortress of Colewide (current town of Pihen-les-Guînes) which will be destroyed in 1214 [ 61 ] , erects a chapel in the castle for which he obtains from the chapter of Thérouanne, with the approval of Bishop Milon , the right to celebrate the divine service there [ 62 ] and made restore the tower of the parish church of Ardres which collapsed but finds himself excommunicated because he had to confiscate the goods of religious [ 13 ] , in particular those of the priory of Ardres given by Baudouin d'Ardres to the abbey of Capelle. He brings back the remains of. The situation lasted three years then Arnould IV changed his mind and returned their property to the religious [ 63 ] . With his brother Simon he signed last charter by Arnould I st of Guines, freeing the people of St. Bertin, from any tax or toll when passing in Guines County to go to England [ 64 ] , [ 65 ] . In 1160, he gave a tithe to Audruicq at the Abbey of Licques [ 4 ] . In 1169, Arnould, called viscount of Ardres, was part of the court of the count of Flanders , Philippe d'Alsace. As such, he subscribed with other lords of this court, to a donation made by the count to the abbey of Marchiennes by a charter dated this year [ 66 ] . At this same time, in 1173, he ratified with the consent of his wife Adeline, a donation made to the abbey of Andres by Clément d'Ardres, of one third of the tithes that said Clément held from him as a fief in Zouafques : Guillaume II, Abbot of Beaulieu en Boulonnais, ratified this charter as a witness [ 67 ] . He also created a maladrerie (leprosarium) or cobbler with a chapel in the hamlet of Lostbarne (commune of Louches). Arnould died around 1176 having seen his son-in-law access the county of Guînes [ 13 ] . Adeline dies at the same time as her husband, is buried in the abbey of Andres [ 68 ] .
Arnould IV only had a Christian daughter (or Christine) of Ardres, heir to Ardres, Marck and Colewide who was asked in marriage for Baudouin, son of Arnould de Gand , count of Guînes under the name of ' Arnould I st Guînes . After the death of Arnould I st of Guines in England , his son Baldwin II of Guines , Christian husband Ardres and therefore son of Arnold IV, became count of Guines.
