The Complete Peerage (vol VII, p. 228) states that Earl Thomas was the son of John "Cam" FitzJohn, who was the son of John FitzMaurice, 6th Earl of Kildare. Also that Earl Thomas' father never became Earl even though he survived the 6th Earl.

Thomas FitzMaurice FitzGerald, 7th Earl of Kildare was born circa 1421.[2] He was the son of John fitz Maurice FitzGerald and Rose Basset.[1],[2]
He married Lady Joan FitzGerald, daughter of James FitzGerald, 6th Earl of Desmond and Mary de Burgh.[2]
He died on 25 March 1477.[1]
He succeeded to the title of 7th Earl of Kildare [I., 1316] before 1436.[2]
He held the office of Justiciar of Ireland in 1454.[2] He held the office of Justiciar of Ireland between 1461 and 1470.[2]
He held the office of Chancellor of Ireland in 1462.[2]

Thomas FitzMaurice FitzGerald, 7th Earl of Kildare (c.·Äâ1421 ·Äì 25 March 1478), was an Irish peer and statesman who held the office of Lord Chancellor of Ireland.
