Brownie McKie notes: "This is probably the Alexander that immigrated to
Somerset Cnty, MD around 1675."2 SOUR S173
YOUNGER - The comparative of YOUNG, signifying the younger of two bearing
the same Christian name. In Latin documents rendered 'Junior'. A writer
in the Scottish antiquary claims the name is a translation from the
Flemish. 'There seems little doubt,' he says, 'that this is a form of
Joncker, or Youncker, a common Flemish name. In Scotland it occurs in
the three districts where Flemish names appear....As the occupation of
the Youngers in the Fife district was in early times salt-making, a
business then solely carried on by Flemings it is apparent that they must
have been of that race.'
William Yhunger was a tenant of the Douglas in Telny in the barony of
Abirdoure in Fife in 1376, Fynlaw Ywnger was one of the assize on the
marches of Woodwrae in 1388, and John Zownger was tenant of Syokis in
1474. Jhone Zoungar was tenant of the 'Brewland off Partyk' in 1521,
David Youngar is recorded as burgess of Glasgow in 1549, William Yungar
was a cordiner in Edinburgh in 1573, and another William Youngar was a
beidman there in 1584. The Youngers of Clackmannan and West Linton are
in record from c. 1559.
The Youngers are a famous family of Edinburgh brewers. 'The name of
Younger, it seems, is of the same stock with the Youngs, by their arms'.
The first Alexander Yong was chaplain and procurator of the house of the
Holy Trinity of Aberdeen in 1439, John Zung was a presbyter in Glasgow in
1442, and William Yhonge and Walter Yhonge, Scottish merchants, had safe
conducts into England in 1446, and so also had Patrick Yunge (Yonge or
Yhong), dean of Dunkeld in 1449. Another Alexander Yonge, a native of
Scotland, had letters of denization in England in 1482. 'Excerpted from
THE SURNAMES OF SCOTLAND by George F. Black.'
