BEAUDOIN Jean known as Small-Jean (c.1638-1713) Pg 133 Son of Jean Beaudoin, the pastrycook, and of Jeanne Bertet of Jarrye, parish Saint Martin's day d' Aytre. â©vââ¢châ© of the La Rochelle, he contracts marriage in front of the notary Basset, on Monday 19 November 1663, with Charlotte Chauvin, born in Montreal Wednesday April 5, 1651, daughter of the late Michel Chauvin and Anne Archambault, and is married in Montreal, on Tuesday November 27 1663. From their union are born twelve children.
He arrives in Montreal in 1656 and is involved, according to Faillon, in a skirmish with Iroquois, on March 14, 1661. He kill one of the Iroquois chiefs, is made prisoner and is taken along as a captive. Without news of him, everyone believes he is dead when on the 5 May 1661, in the presence of Zacharie Dupuis, the notary Basset precedes to inventory his goods, which are kept by Jean Gervaise. He has few things. He possesses three shirts, four ties, a handkerchief, a small towel, a suit jackets and a pair of breeches.
Released by the Iroquois, he marries in 1663. At the time of the marriage contract, his future father-in-law promises a dowry to the future bride, his adoptive daughter, to lodge and feed the engaged couple in his house, for one year and to give him more than 200 ¬£ in trade goods. The future husband signs at the bottom of this contract. On June 13, 1664, Sieur Maisonneuve concedes to him thirty arpents of land at Coteau Saint-Louis. One month later, on July 14, he buys a house belonging to Fiacre Ducharme situated at a place called the ·Äúvuide bouteille. ·Äù (Empty Bottle) He pays 250 ¬£ worth of beaver. He consequently yields his land at Coteau Saint-Louis to his father-in-law, Jean Gervaise, on May 27, 1668, only for the payment of revenues in arrears. The seigneurs of Montreal had conceded land to him of thirty arpents in area at Sainte-Marie, on November 17 1666. This land was neighbouring that of Jean Masta and Pierre Cabazie. October first, 1668, he sells it for the price of 215 ¬£ to Jean Hardoin. This sale falls through because, on June 21, 1671, he allocated sixty-four minots of his corn to Louis Dubuc. Meanwhile, 8 March 1671, he had sold to Jean Bousquet a cross-section of ·Äú massone a chau et ââ sable·Äù (house of lime and sand) of twenty two feet by twenty one feet belonging to him on the slope behind the garden of the hospital. He obtains from him 360 ¬£ for the principal and 10 ¬£ worth of a vat of wine.
He hardly had a chance has to sell his dwelling at Sainte-Marie because, September 21, 1673, he is again that property·Äôs owner and this time he exchanges it for land of the same land size as possessed by Pierre de Vauchy on the âéle Sainte-Thâ©râ©se. However on 4 August 1677, he again tries to sell his land on Sainte-Marie for 200 ¬£ to Pierre Chesne. Again on 2 August 1679, he lets it go in favour of Pierre Cabazie, who occupies the neighbouring land, for the price of 160 ¬£. In the census of 1681, he has eight animals with horns and land of 8 arpents in value. Since 1673, he lived at the fort at the end of the island at Pointe-aux-Trembles where he received a concession in 1671.
September 24, 1693, with his son Guillaume and Jean Langlois, he rents for three years, for 35 minots of wheat each year, the land of Pierre Chesne, neighbouring that which he occupies at the end of the Island. He also has a dwelling in Repentigny. On July 13, 1689, he obtained from the sieur Duguâ© a contract of concession for the land on the island of Sainte-Thâ©râ©se. Having broken this contract, he makes a copy of it with Senet and registers it at the Clerk's Office of the notary Adhâ©mar on March 6th, 1699. Since June first, 1698, he had started to divide up his goods by selling his two bulls to his son Guillaume and to his other four bulls to sons, Jacques and Franâßois. He makes official these sales by making a declaration in front of the notary Adhemar, on June 19, 1700. He sells his land on the Island of Sainte-Thâ©râ©se for the price of 600 ¬£ to Nicolas Chaput, December 31, 1700. He dies at Pointe-aux-Trembles where he is buried on September 25, 1713. His widow is buried at the same place on October 31, 1718. Signature number 58.
