Edward Philpott I, born c. 1600, died 20 March 1679, came to Maryland from England about 1650. He came to SM Co. about 1650 as an indentured servant to either Robert Brooke of de la Brooke or William Mitchell. He was a wheelright and carpenter. The word carpenter in the 1600's is the same as what we call an architect today. In 1662 he was recognized as a Planter by the officials in the Province of Maryland. He settled in Old Charles County, Md. near the Patuxant River and west of Wiccomico River. This home was at the head of Wiccomico River. (On Aug. 11, 1666 John and Margaret Courts conveyed 100 a. Courts Palace to Edward Philpott, wheelright (CHLRC:54)).
Edward married Bridgett Teares, between 1657 and 1659 in Charles County, Md. (Note: Bridgett's date of birth and date of death have not been determined by research).
They had three children:
1. Johanna Philpott b. about 1664 in Charles County
2. Edward Philpott b. about 1665 in William and Mary Parish, Charles County, Md. He inherited his father's land.
3. Charles Philpott b. 19 Feb. 1666/67 in Charles Co., Md.

On 20 March 1679 John Courts and John Bracher appraised Philpott's personal estate at 6976 lbs. Tob. (INAC7A:63)

When David Philpott, Edward's great, great grandson sold the family lands in 1778, he set aside 30 square yards for a cemetary which his father and it is assumed his grandparents were buried.
