"A descendant (James Barker), who was born only seventy years after his death, makes the following incidental reference to him: "Frances the wife of William Vaughan, died September 1677, in the 67th years of her age. She was daughter of Lewis Latham. She was sometime wife of Lord Weston, then wife to William Dungan, by whom she had one son and three daughters. Her son Thomas Dungan married, and settled in Pennsylvania and was the first Baptist minister in them parts. Her daughter Barbara married to James Barker of Rhode Island. Through Lewis Latham's daughter Frances, his blood, though not his name, has been perpetrated to an extraordinary degree both in Rhode Island and in other parts of the United States. She doubtless brought with her the portrait of her father on coming to America with her third husband. The tombstones erected to her memory may still be seen in Newport Cemetery. The inscription is as follows: "Here Lyeth ye Body of Mrs France Vaughan, Allus Clarke, ye mother of ye only Children of Capt'n Jeremiah Clarke. She died ye 1 Week in Sept. 1677 in ye 67th year of her age." "

Latham
Frances Latham now generally called "The Mother of Governors," because no less than fourteen of her direct descendants, and many sons-in-law in succeeding generations, became Governors or Lieut. Governors. Baptized 15 February 1609/10, she was the eldest of nine children of Lewis Latham whose portrait is in the collection of the late George W. Elkins, a descendant of Lewis Latham.
He who was of Elston, co. Bedford, England, was born about, 1584 and buried 15 May 1655, aged about 71 years. He was a member of the King's household, and Falconer to Prince Henry in 1612, and later was Sergeant Falconer to King Charles I.

We can imagine Frances as a young girl on the moors in companionship with her father as he attended the Royal Princes, Henry and Charlie, in their hunting with falcons, ever a favorite royal sport, the birds being highly trained to search out and pounce upon rabbit, grouse and other small game and bring them to their master.
Frances Latham was married in 1627 at age 17 to William Dungan, Gentleman, who was born about 1606, a London Merchant and Perfumer. His wares were in great demand and quite necessary to offset the obnoxious odors arising from the gutters in a thickly settled district subject to heavy fog and having surface drainage.
They made their home at St. Martins-in-the-Fields where later he died and was buried 20 September 1636, leaving her a widow at age 26 with four little children between the ages of 2 and 8 years. By his Will dated 13 September 1636 he gave all his property to his wife Frances, after bequeathing £70 to each of his four children whom he mentions by name.
About a year after William Dungan's death she was married to her second husband Jeremy Clarke, who was baptized 1 December, 1605. Jeremy and Frances came to Rhode Island about the year 1637 bringing the four young children by her first marriage. They settled at Newport where Mr. Clark became the first Constable, and in 1648 Governor and Treasurer of the Rhode Island Colony. His family were members of the Society of Friends at Newport, the first Quaker settlement in America. Here at age 46 Jeremy Clark died, and here according to records of Friends Meeting lie was buried 11 mo. 3rd, 1651.
Frances was married about 1655 to her third husband Rev. William Vaughan, Doctor of Civil Law, poet and distinguished scholar, one of the original members of the First Baptist Church of Newport, and one of the founders of the Second Baptist Church of which he was the first minister. He died in August 1677, by him she had no children, and outliving him only a few weeks, she died in September 1677, in her 67th year, and is buried at Newport in the Govemor's lot.
Frances Latham was the mother of seven sons and four daughters. They all married, and all but William had children. Four, probably born in London, were by her first husband:

2. Frances Dungan born about 1630, died 1697, married Hon. Randall Holden.
3. William Dungan born about 1632, married Jane.
4. Rev. Thomas Dungan born about 1634, married Elizabeth Weaver.

about Frances Latham
Frances Latham was the daughter of Lewis Latham, of Elstow, in the county of Bedford, England, "Sergeant Falconer" to the King of England. She had been baptised in Kempston, Bedford, England, 15 Feb. 1609. She was married 4 times before her death at Newport, R.I., in Sept. 1677. Her first marriage was to Lord Richard Weston who died within the first year. There were no children from this marriage.
Before William's early death, he and Frances had 4 children, all baptized at St. Martin's between 1630 and 1634/5. Thomas, was the last child, and he was baptized 13 February 1634/5. William's burial is recorded as 20 September 1636. Shortly after this, probably 1637, Frances Latham Weston Dungan married Jeremy Clarke, and they brought her family with them to Rhode Island, where he was to serve as Governor of that colony.
From the parish Registers of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, London, 1619-1636 published 1936, volume 2, pages 143, 72, 89, 99, 112, 313 we see: Marriages: 27 Aug. 1629: Guillielmus Dungan & Francisca Ladham, with license. The earliest American account of this family was written by one of Frances Dungan's descendants, and reads as follows: Frances, the wife of Wm. Vaughan, died September, 1677, in the 67th year of her age. She was daughter of Lewis Latham. She was sometime wife of Lord Weston, then wife to Wm. Dungan, by whom she had one son and three daughters. Her son Thomas Dungan married and settled in Pennsylvania, and was the first Baptist minister in them parts. "Frances Latham, Mother of Governors has among her descendants, wither direct or by marriage, twenty-two Governors and Lieutenant Governors. Fourteen at least are lineal descendants and include seven governors and seven Lieutenant Governors. Both the Dungan and Clarke descendants share in this "Historic Stain of Blood."
"She was said to be beautiful and some of her descendants have been called beautiful. Elizabeth Doyle, granddaughter of (her son) Thomas Dungan, was very beautiful. Two of Walter Clarke's descendants were Mary Fleming Hare and Mary Stockton Rotch--both women of beauty."

Frances Latham was the daughter of Lewis Latham, of Elstow, in the county of Bedford, England, "Sergeant Falconer" to the King of England. She had been baptised in Kempston, Bedford, England, 15 Feb. 1609. She was married 4 times before her death at Newport, R.I., in Sept. 1677. Her first marriage was to Lord Richard Weston who died within the first year. There were no children from this marriage.
Before William's early death, he and Frances had 4 children, all baptized at St. Martin's between 1630 and 1634/5. Thomas, was the last child, and he was baptized 13 February 1634/5. William's burial is recorded as 20 September 1636. Shortly after this, probably 1637, Frances Latham Weston Dungan married Jeremy Clarke, and they brought her family with them to Rhode Island, where he was to serve as Governor of that colony.
From the parish Registers of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, London, 1619-1636 published 1936, volume 2, pages 143, 72, 89, 99, 112, 313 we see: Marriages: 27 Aug. 1629: Guillielmus Dungan & Francisca Ladham, with license. The earliest American account of this family was written by one of Frances Dungan's descendants, and reads as follows: Frances, the wife of Wm. Vaughan, died September, 1677, in the 67th year of her age. She was daughter of Lewis Latham. She was sometime wife of Lord Weston, then wife to Wm. Dungan, by whom she had one son and three daughters. Her son Thomas Dungan married and settled in Pennsylvania, and was the first Baptist minister in them parts. Her daughter Barbara, married to James Barker of Rhode Island. After Mr. Dungan died, she married Mr. Jeremiah Clarke and came over to New England with her four children, above mentioned. She had by her husband Clarke, five sons. After he died she married Mr. Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan, spoken of above, was a Baptist minister, and living in Rhode Island, the cradle of colonial Baptists, we assume Frances was not only a Baptist herself, but had a strong influence on her son Thomas. The tombstone of the matriarch who brought her strong line to the colonies and to us, is still standing in the old cemetery at Newport, Rhode Island. Frances Latham now generally called "The Mother of Governors," because no less than fourteen of her direct descendants, and many sons-in-law in succeeding generations, became Governors or Lieut. Governors. Baptized 15 February 1609/10, she was the eldest of nine children of Lewis Latham whose portrait is in the collection of the late George W. Elkins, a descendant of Lewis Latham.
He who was of Elston, co. Bedford, England, was born about, 1584 and buried 15 May 1655, aged about 71 years. He was a member of the King's household, and Falconer to Prince Henry in 1612, and later was Sergeant Falconer to King Charles I.

We can imagine Frances as a young girl on the moors in companionship with her father as he attended the Royal Princes, Henry and Charlie, in their hunting with falcons, ever a favorite royal sport, the birds being highly trained to search out and pounce upon rabbit, grouse and other small game and bring them to their master.
Frances Latham was married in 1627 at age 17 to William Dungan, Gentleman, who was born about 1606, a London Merchant and Perfumer. His wares were in great demand and quite necessary to offset the obnoxious odors arising from the gutters in a thickly settled district subject to heavy fog and having surface drainage.
They made their home at St. Martins-in-the-Fields where later he died and was buried 20 September 1636, leaving her a widow at age 26 with four little children between the ages of 2 and 8 years. By his Will dated 13 September 1636 he gave all his property to his wife Frances, after bequeathing £70 to each of his four children whom he mentions by name.
About a year after William Dungan's death she was married to her second husband Jeremy Clarke, who was baptized 1 December, 1605. Jeremy and Frances came to Rhode Island about the year 1637 bringing the four young children by her first marriage. They settled at Newport where Mr. Clark became the first Constable, and in 1648 Governor and Treasurer of the Rhode Island Colony. His family were members of the Society of Friends at Newport, the first Quaker settlement in America. Here at age 46 Jeremy Clark died, and here according to records of Friends Meeting lie was buried 11 mo. 3rd, 1651.
Frances was married about 1655 to her third husband Rev. William Vaughan, Doctor of Civil Law, poet and distinguished scholar, one of the original members of the First Baptist Church of Newport, and one of the founders of the Second Baptist Church of which he was the first minister. He died in August 1677, by him she had no children, and outliving him only a few weeks, she died in September 1677, in her 67th year, and is buried at Newport in the Govemor's lot.
Frances Latham was the mother of seven sons and four daughters. They all married, and all but William had children. Four, probably born in London, were by her first husband:

Jeremy Clarke's maternal uncle, Sir Richard Weston, was elevated to the peerage and made first Earl of Portland by King Charles I of England. Frances Latham Dungan's father, Lewis Latham, was Sergeant Falconer to King Charles. They possibly knew each other since childhood.

Through Lewis Latham's daughter Frances, his blood, though not his name, has been perpetrated to an extraordinary degree both in Rhode Island and in other parts of the United States. Frances was married about 1655 to her third husband Rev. William Vaughan, Doctor of Civil Law, poet and distinguished scholar, one of the original members of the First Baptist Church of Newport, and one of the founders of the Second Baptist Church of which he was the first minister. He died in August 1677, by him she had no children, and outliving him only a few weeks, she died in September 1677, in her 67th year, and is buried at Newport in the Governor's lot.
Frances Latham is now called "The Mother of Governors," because no less than fourteen of her direct descendants, and many sons-in-law in succeeding generations, became Governors or Lieut. Governors.
Her first four children were: Barbara Dungan married Dep. Gov. James Barker, William Dungan, Frances Dungan married Capt. Hon. Holden and Rev. Thomas Dungan.
After her husband William Dungan died, she married Jeremiah Clarke, and came over to Rhode Island, where her husband served as governor. She had by her husband Clarke, five sons; after he died she married Rev. William Vaughan.
The tombstone to the memory of William Dungan's widow is still standing in the old cemetery at Newport. The inscription reads as follows: "Here Lyeth ye Body of Mrs. Frances Vaughan, Alius Clarke, ye mother of ye only children of Capt'n Jeremiah Clarke. She died ye 1 Week in Sept. 1677 in ye 67th year of her age."

Frances Latham was the daughter of Lewis Latham, of Elstow, in the county of Bedford, England, "Sergeant Falconer" to the King of England. She had been baptised in Kempston, Bedford, England, 15 Feb. 1609. She was married 4 times before her death at Newport, R.I., in Sept. 1677. Her first marriage was to Lord Richard Weston who died within the first year. There were no children from this marriage.
Before William's early death, he and Frances had 4 children, all baptized at St. Martin's between 1630 and 1634/5. Thomas, was the last child, and he was baptized 13 February 1634/5. William's burial is recorded as 20 September 1636. Shortly after this, probably 1637, Frances Latham Weston Dungan married Jeremy Clarke, and they brought her family with them to Rhode Island, where he was to serve as Governor of that colony.

The earliest American account of this family was written by one of Frances Dungan's descendants, and reads as follows: Frances, the wife of Wm. Vaughan, died September, 1677, in the 67th year of her age. She was daughter of Lewis Latham. She was sometime wife of Lord Weston, then wife to Wm. Dungan, by whom she had one son and three daughters. Her son Thomas Dungan married and settled in Pennsylvania, and was the first Baptist minister in them parts. Her daughter Barbara, married to James Barker of Rhode Island. After Mr. Dungan died, she married Mr. Jeremiah Clarke and came over to New England with her four children, above mentioned. She had by her husband Clarke, five sons. After he died she married Mr. Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan, spoken of above, was a Baptist minister, and living in Rhode Island, the cradle of colonial Baptists, we assume Frances was not only a Baptist herself, but had a strong influence on her son Thomas. The tombstone of the matriarch who brought her strong line to the colonies and to us, is still standing in the old cemetery at Newport, Rhode Island. "Frances Latham, Mother of Governors has among her descendants, wither direct or by marriage, twenty-two Governors and Lieutenant Governors. Fourteen at least are lineal descendants and include seven governors and seven Lieutenant Governors. Both the Dungan and Clarke descendants share in this "Historic Stain of Blood." "She was said to be beautiful and some of her descendants have been called beautiful. Elizabeth Doyle, granddaughter of (her son) Thomas Dungan, was very beautiful. Two of Walter Clarke's descendants were Mary Fleming Hare and Mary Stockton Rotch--both women of beauty." About a year after William Dungan's death Frances was married to her third husband Jeremy Clarke, who was baptized 1 December, 1605. Jeremy and Frances came to Rhode Island about the year 1637 bringing the four young children by her first marriage. They settled at Newport where Mr. Clark became the first Constable, and in 1648 Governor and Treasurer of the Rhode Island Colony. His family were members of the Society of Friends at Newport, the first Quaker settlement in America. Here at age 46 Jeremy Clark died, and here according to records of Friends Meeting, was buried 11 mo. 3rd, 1651.

We can imagine Frances as a young girl on the moors in companionship with her father as he attended the Royal Princes, Henry and Charlie, in their hunting with falcons, ever a favorite royal sport, the birds being highly trained to search out and pounce upon rabbit, grouse and other small game and bring them to their master.
Frances Latham was married in 1627 at age 17 to William Dungan, Gentleman, who was born about 1606, a London Merchant and Perfumer. His wares were in great demand and quite necessary to offset the obnoxious odors arising from the gutters in a thickly settled district subject to heavy fog and having surface drainage.
They made their home at St. Martins-in-the-Fields where later he died and was buried 20 September 1636, leaving her a widow at age 26 with four little children between the ages of 2 and 8 years. By his Will dated 13 September 1636 he gave all his property to his wife Frances, after bequeathing £70 to each of his four children whom he mentions by name.
About a year after William Dungan's death she was married to her second husband Jeremy Clarke, who was baptized 1 December, 1605. Jeremy and Frances came to Rhode Island about the year 1637 bringing the four young children by her first marriage. Frances Latham (Dungan Clarke Vaughn) is known as "Mother of Governors". Her 3rd husband was Rev William Vaughn. She had 4 children by 1st husband; from descendants of these childrena are many distinquished statesmen. There are 7 children born of 2nd marriage, & these too have given many govs to country. Each 1 of Frances Latham Clarke's sons served his country, or church, w/public svc, & each dtr married men who did same. "She was undoubtedly very attractive woman, her 3 marriages would indicate. One can only imagine gathering of distinquished men & women in the 'Common Burial Ground' of Newport when Frances Vaughn, recently widowed for 3rd time was laid in her grave. There was her eldest Clarke son, then gov, her dtr Mary, w/husband, then Deputy-Gov John Cranston & later gov; & their son Samuel, who bef century closed would also be gov; her dtr Sarah, sometime wife of Gov Caleb Carr; Barbara w/husband, James Baker, to be chosen next year as deputy gov; Frances & her husband, Maj Randall Holden, ancestors of several of RI's govs & 1 of Washington: Weston Clarke, then atty-genl; James, Latham, & Jeremiah Clarke, w/their sons & dtrs, & Rev Thomas Dungan, who perhaps was 1 to say last sacred words over his mother's grave "Mother of Governors".

Jeremy Clarke's maternal uncle, Sir Richard Weston, was elevated to the peerage and made first Earl of Portland by King Charles I of England. Frances Latham Dungan's father, Lewis Latham, was Sergeant Falconer to King Charles. They possibly knew each other since childhood. (See Picture of Link to Charles I)

Frances Latham was the daughter of Lewis Latham, of Elstow, in the county of Bedford, England, "Sergeant Falconer" to the King of England. She had been baptised in Kempston, Bedford, England, 15 Feb. 1609. She was married 4 times before her death at Newport, R.I., in Sept. 1677. Her first marriage was to Lord Richard Weston who died within the first year. There were no children from this marriage.
Before William's early death, he and Frances had 4 children, all baptized at St. Martin's between 1630 and 1634/5. Thomas, was the last child, and he was baptized 13 February 1634/5. William's burial is recorded as 20 September 1636. Shortly after this, probably 1637, Frances Latham Weston Dungan married Jeremy Clarke, and they brought her family with them to Rhode Island, where he was to serve as Governor of that colony.
From the parish Registers of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, London, 1619-1636 published 1936, volume 2, pages 143, 72, 89, 99, 112, 313 we see: Marriages: 27 Aug. 1629: Guillielmus Dungan & Francisca Ladham, with license. Baptisms: 28 Sep 1630: Barbarea Dunken filia Guillelmi et Franciscae 12 Nov 1632: Frances Dungan filia Willimi et Frannciscae 13 Dec 1663: Elizabetha Dungan filia Guillelmi et Francesscae 13 Feb 1634/5: Thomas Dunkin fillius Guillelmi et Franscescae Burials: 20 Sep 1636: W'mus Dungham, vir.
The earliest American account of this family was written by one of Frances Dungan's descendants, and reads as follows: Frances, the wife of Wm. Vaughan, died September, 1677, in the 67th year of her age. She was daughter of Lewis Latham. She was sometime wife of Lord Weston, then wife to Wm. Dungan, by whom she had one son and three daughters. Her son Thomas Dungan married and settled in Pennsylvania, and was the first Baptist minister in them parts. Her daughter Barbara, married to James Barker of Rhode Island. After Mr. Dungan died, she married Mr. Jeremiah Clarke and came over to New England with her four children, above mentioned. She had by her husband Clarke, five sons. After he died she married Mr. Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan, spoken of above, was a Baptist minister, and living in Rhode Island, the cradle of colonial Baptists, we assume Frances was not only a Baptist herself, but had a strong influence on her son Thomas. The tombstone of the matriarch who brought her strong line to the colonies and to us, is still standing in the old cemetery at Newport, Rhode Island. It reads: "Here Lyeth ye Body of Mrs. Frances Vaughan, Alius Clarke, ye mother of ye only children of Capt'n Jeremiah Clarke. She died ye 1 Week in Sept. 1677 in ye 67th year of her age."

Francis Dungan married Randall Holden in 1648 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island. "New England Marriages Prior To 1700" by Clarence Torrey page 380 lists ^Holden, Randall (1612-1692) married Frances Dangan (?1632-1697).*
Francis (Dungan )Holdens step.father(Jeremy Clarke) passed away in 1652 in Rhode Island.
Her mother married a third time to William Lord Vaughn in 1654.
