Notes par James Dabney

Known and verified facts about James DABNEY: 1) 30 April 1690, James DABNEY married Anne SHERWOOD in Sitterbourne Parish, Old Rappahannock Parish, Virginia. If he were 21 years old at the time of his marriage, he would have to have been born in 1669 or earlier. He was probably born earlier. 2) 8 January 1698, "Dau Welthan [sometimes written as Welthian; sometimes Nelthan] was baptized in St Peter's Parish, New Kent, Virginia." 3) 1699, James DABNEY, along with his brother George DABNEY and two sisters, Sarah DABNEY and Dorothy are left land, as DEVISEEs by their father, the Emigrant Cornelius DABNEY. In 1699, this land in the Pamunkey River neck of land was in King and Queen county. It had been cut from the parent county of New Kent; but by 1701, part of this same Pamunkey Neck land was in King William county. 4) 1701, James DABNEY held patents in the Pamunkey Neck which were originally patented in King and Queen county; but then were cut out into King William county. 5) 1702, James DABNEY held 1000 acres along the Pamunkey River and Mehixon Creek on the lower side in the fork between the river and the creek that joined the lands of his brother George. 6) 1704 Quit Rent rolls: James DABNEY, of St. John's Parish held 200 acres in New Kent county and 320 acres in King William county. these counties are contiguous. 7) 1709, James DABNEY was on the Commission of Justices for King William county. 8) By 1714, James DABNEY is left out of any records in either of his landed counties. therefore, he had either died or had moved between 1709 and 1714. Probability is that he had died. 9) Using the coordinates of James DABNEY's land records, it can be established that the Cornelius DABNEY who married Lucy WINSTON and then died about 1738 was a son of James DABNEY. Two MUST Reads for all DABNEY Researchers: "The English Birth and Ancestry of Cornelius DABNEY (1631-1693/4) of Virginia", Arden H. BRAME, Jr.; The Colonial Genealogist, XII:3 & reprinted in the Augustan Society MCMLVII. also, "The DABNEYs of Colonial Virginia"---written by Dabney N. McLean. As of December 2015, it has been established that Cornelius DABNEY had two known wives: the name of the first wife was transcribed in a 1678 letter to Colonel Francis MORYSON. The name has variously been written as Eedeth, El'beth, Edith, Elizabeth and Estelle. It is certain her last name was NOT MORYSON; and his second wife was Susanna but it has also been disproved that her last name was SWANN. Cornelius had EIGHT definite children by two wives: By his first wife, he had James, George and Sarah, known as Devisees on his land in 1699 King and Queen County, Virginia. John and Elizabeth were both identified by their 1688 deaths in the St. Peter's Parish Records of New Kent county, Virginia. Dorothy DABNEY is also identified in the 1699 devisees. However, in the 1722 St. Paul's Parish, Hanover, Virginia will which was probated in 1724, Dorothy DABNEY (1) William ANDERSON and (2) James TRICE was specifically named by Susannah [maiden name unknown] DABNEY Anderson as one of her THREE beloved DABNEY children, the other two being Mary, born 1688 and Cornelius II who was the Cornelius who married in 1721 Hanover county Virginia Sarah JENNINGS.
