Subject:RE: [PABUCKS-L] Earltown
This might help with the name Earltown.
Following is an exerpt from the booklet published by the New Holland, PA borough back in 1980, page 7
The NEW HOLLAND Story
It is thought that the name originally given to the community was Saue Schwamm (Literally "hog-swamp"). This name was associated with the town since immediately north of the village was a narrow strip of low land where Leonard Stone pastured his hogs and possibly some of the hogs belonging to his neighbors. The town was called EARLTOWN for a while, since it was the largest town in Earl Township. New Design was also the name in use occasionally......a name suggested by the new design that Michael Diffenderffer had in mind in his plan already mentioned. But the name that came into being and remained was New Holland. This suggested by the land where the emigrants embarked for the new world, and the land which afforded them a friendly refuge from the troublesome regions which were their former homes.
New Holland was first settled around 1727, so I suppose that the name Earltown was used around 1730 and was out of use by 1810 when an act was passed authorizing the New Holland Turnpike to be built.
It this is the Earltown that you are looking for I will be more than happy to pass on any other info that I have.
Bob Rice from New Holland, formerly EARLTOWN, PA.

In order to obtain the benefits of the act of Congress 7th June 1832 State of Pennsylvania Lancaster County
On this 4th day of August 1843 personally appeared before me Emanuel Schaffer one of the associate judges of the court of Common Pleas in and for said county John Kurtz, a resident of the township of Manheim, in county and state forsaid, aged 87 years - who being first sworn according to law do say and declare as follows:
That in the year 1776 in July I joined Captain Andrew Graff's company comprising part of the "Flying Camp" and was marched from the Borough now City of Lancaster to Philadelphia. From thence we crossed the Delaware and marched to Elizabethtown (Jersey). From thence to Amboy, we remained a few days there, and then we marched back to Elizabethtown. From there we were marched to New York barracks. From thence we were taken to Long Island where we had an engagement with the British. we retreated from thence back to New York (with the loss of some of our men and camp equipment). When the British entered New York we left for Fort Washington and from thence to Fort Lee. We remained but a few days. Throwing up embankments the British came upon us. We retreated to New Brunswick, here we had a skirmish with the British. From thence we retreated to Trenton and arrived but a short tinme after the Hessians surrendered. Our compan y was ordered as part guard of the Hessians to the Lancaster Barracks. After the prisoners had been safely deposited in the Barracks, the company was dischared.
In the year 1778 I was again drafted under Captain John Hubley and was marched to Shamoken, after remaining there during the winter of 1778. We again returned to Lancaster and was regularly discharged in the summer of 1779.
In the year 1779, shortly after my discharge was again drafter under Captain John Hughes for two months and done duty by standing guard at the Lancaster barracks & stockades and was at the expiration of the two months regularly discharged.
In the above mentioned year 1779 I was again drafter for five months and done duty by hauling prisoners, powder and muskets to the barracks and also provisions from across the Conestoga to the prisoners and soldiers at the barracks at Lancaster.
Further declarant saith not--
sworn to subscribed the day and year foresaid before me.
E Schaeffer
John Kurtz
