CROSTHWAITE Frederick N., Ret. USN CWO-4, born August 30, 1917, died at home in El Cajon January 30, 1992. His 31 years of service included WWII, Korean War and the Vietnam conflict. Member of the San Diego Masonic Lodge #35 and the San Diego Fleet Reserve Assn. Branch 47, where he served as president and chaplain; VFW, and AmVets of El Cajon. Maternal grandparents John and Annie Mansir Jassaud established ranches in Imperial and Calexico Valleys around 1875. Fred was the great grandson of Philip Crosthwaite, born in Athy, Kildare County, Ireland, who came to San Diego in 1845 and established a 250,000-acre cattle ranch. Philip was the Charter Worshipful Master of San Diego's first Masonic Lodge, #35, founded in 1854. Philip, who fought in the battle of San Pasqual, persuaded his brother-in-law W. Jeff Gatewood to come to San Diego, where Gatewood established the San Diego Union. Philip was a deputy sheriff here, the county's first treasurer, and a partner in the Old Town General Store. Survivors include Fred's brothers Gilbert and Rupert Crosthwaite, of San Diego; 4 children, son Bill Crosthwaite and daughters Nancy Frankenberger and Karen McJunkin, all of San Diego, and daughter Carolyn Mosely of Bosier City, LA; and 8 grandchildren. Visitation Monday 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Masonic services Tuesday 10 a.m., both at El Camino Mortuary. Interment El Camino Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations to your favorite charity.
